Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers
| My 2 year old daughter surprised us all the other day by insisting on trying on salmon caviar and loving it. We gave her a small portion and thought that she was going to spit it out but she finished it in a few minutes and asked for more. I tried googling whether it is safe for her to eat it and how often but found nothing. Any ideas? |
| Safe and very healthy, full of good fish oils. It's a common early food for toddlers in Japan and eastern europe. |

One of my parents' favorite stories is about how my brother ate a full dozen raw oysters at about 2 years of age. He saw a waitress carrying some in a restaurant and said "want dat!" so my parents got the waitress to bring one. Then he insisted on more. Everyone in the restaurant gathered to watch this toddler snarfing down oysters on the half shell.
(Sorry, no idea about the safety of caviar. It just seemed like a good time to tell a tangentially-related story.) |

My son eats caviar and has done so from a very young age. My husband likes it (I won't touch the stuff). I guess I
a bad mom because the safety of it never crossed my mind. But my son is still very much alive!

| I was wondering the same thing about sushi. I felt a little sheepish asking the ped when my son could eat raw fish, but I would like to know! |
| My husband asked our doctor about sushi and he was told that whenever she was able to chew it, she could have it. The doc just said to be careful about fish with known high mercury content. He also said that it was more about whether the kid would eat it than whether they could. DD loves sushi and now I am considering giving her oysters! |

My older son loved sushi from an early age, I just avoided tuna because of mercury.
My current toddler loves the salmon caviar--the only reason I don't let him eat too much of it is the salt content. Go for it and be glad you have an adventurous eater! |
