YY late start date.

Does the school always start after Labor Day or is it just this year due to construction? Incoming parent trying to plan for subsequent years. Thank you.

The past two years school has started the Monday before Labor Day. Not sure if this year is an anomaly because of construction or not.

This year the late start is due to the construction of the new school. In previous years it started before Labor Day.

when announcing the new bldg, administration announced the start date as a one time thing.

as a PP said, in 2009 and 2010, the school started Monday before Labor Day, a week after DCPS school started in each of those years. Many charters seem to start on this day.

Also, in 2009 & 2010, YY had a "meet the teacher, see the classroom" either the Thurs or Fri before school started. Finally, YY has also had a 2 week summer program, free for students who have completed preK and above. In 2009, it was in August (~ 1st and 2nd weeks), and they found the summer program was too close to the start of school year. In 2010, it was (I think) last week July, 1st week August. In 2011, it was late June, early July because they had to have it in the old building.

The summer program depends on separate funding from DC. In 2010, funding was unclear until close to the last minute, and many families had made other camp plans. Who knows if there will be funding in 2012, but another thing to consider as you make summer plans.
