This this this. They went out their way to be deceitful as possible. That's not Kate's MO at all. if she wasn't feeling up to it she would made a brief statement it's old and moved on.

The “kill order” comes from the AP. The AP put the photo on the wire, which means news organizations who are members of the AP can use it. The “kill order” says “hey, retract and/or don’t publish this photo, because it was digitally altered and we didn’t know and didn’t label it as such.” It doesn’t matter if the digital manipulation was just adding her hand or photoshopping out a cow in the background or whatever. The AP is just following its policy about digital editing.

about the Nov photo, DM comments suggest Kate was not in the pic at all - probably Wills. So Kate was dropped in entirely.

But also, if her “face” was borrowed from the Vogue photo shoot without permission, there is a copyright liability issue.
