Basement renovation - has anyone lowered the floors or dug out unfinished parts?

Our basement is only built out on one side of the house. We are thinking of digging our that side and lowering the floors on the other side to get higher ceilings. We woul dlike a guest bedroom and playroom. If you have done this, how long did it take and approximate cost?
Any words of advice?
