I keep hearing differing things about having your ductwork cleaned. Some sources say it's worth it/helpful, others say it's harmful. Anyone have a case when they feel it was beneficial? Former owners had lots of pets and I'm kind of wondering what's deep inside our ductwork...
Funny thing bc I just called to have ours done. I own a condo and have been here for 5 years no previous owners. Last weekend DH and I were cleaning and opened the duct by taking off the cover to just see how it was and we have black MOLD! I'm horrified! We ate paying $400 to have it all cleaned!

I think it's worthwhile to do this every couple of years. When we moved to our, we had the duckwork cleaned and it was diguesting. For us, it would worth spending $400 to have that initial cleaning.
Years ago, we had it done after we had the floors refinished. However, I have seen studies (I don't remember where) that say that you actually worse off by stirring up all the dust that would otherwise sit in your duct and not bother anyone. With your air conditioner running, the air is blowing through at a constant speed, so it's not like a sudden gust is going to blast it out.

Here's some good info from EPA http://epa.gov/iaq/pubs/airduct.html
