Hi there!
I have been trying to sort out the ton of info on this very useful site. Thanks to all who post here regularly for all the advice and info. I am a parent moving to Bethesda for a new job and need advice on a school for my 31/2 yr old daughter. I was looking for a school with a low teacher student ratio(1:6-1:10) since she does much better in a smaller class(smaller than public schools) with more individual attention .Any montessori pre schools in the area that is of this nature? Those who have had preschoolers go to in bethesda and surrounding areas please advice. |
| Why don't you post in the preschool section? |
| Take a look at Stone Ridge in Bethesda. They offer a 3 year old program which is very good. |
| Montessoris all tend to have bigger classes - actually unless I'm mistaken, I think the big class size is part of the philosophy. |

Evergreen Montessori (Wheaton).
We are very happy there! Low teacher/child ratio. Two classes have 18 kids (w/ 1 teacher, 1 assistant per room) and the other 2 classes have about 12 kids each (w/ 1 teacher, 1 assistant per room.) |
| Thank you all for your replies, will explore stone ridge and the one in wheaton. Any thoughts about apple montessori? |
| Manor Montessori has 3 teachers per about 24 kids. We loved It there. 2 Locations in Bethesda (MassAve near Little Falls and Old GeorgetowN Rd near Tuckerman) and one in Potomac on Oaklyn near Falls Rd. Good luck. |
| Manor looks good will look into it |
| As a PP mentioned, the point of Montessori is for kids to learn from kids and for kids to teach kids. Teachers, called directresses, are primarily there to guide or direct the teaching/learning. Smaller classrooms really don't work very well - kids won't have enough other kids to learn from/teach/play with. If you visit a couple of well-run Montessoris, you'll see how it works. Whether you agree or disagree with the method, it's definitely interesting to watch. |
Hope you like it, the staff are great and it is such a warm, loving place. Our children really thrived there both academically and socially. |
| Harbor School in Bethesda has a ratio of about 1:6 or even less. Not Montessori, but I was very impressed on my tours! The other preschool I found that has extremely low ratios is Grace Episcopal in Silver Spring, something like 1:4 for the 3-year-olds. |
| I really wanted to like Montessori, but none of the ones I visited around Bethesda seemed like an environment I wanted to leave my child in (cold, burned out teachers, dingy classrooms, or administrators I couldn't relate to, or else too pricey once after-care is added in). However, I eventually found 3 or 4 play-based ones that I LOVE! So don't get discouraged if it takes a while for you to find the right fit! The preschools are all so different. |
| Try Mater Amoris Montessori in Ashton, MD. My DD went there for 8 years. They turned every kid into a superstar. |
| Hi all thank you for your replies.....will look into all the ones suggested ...it aint easy for sure! |
