Retractable awning?

Anonymous
Some trees have been removed in our neighborhood and now we're getting zero shade on our patio. DH is researching one of those retractable awnings to attach to the back of the house. Anyone have one? Any advice or particular company that you'd recommend? We thought we'd enjoy having more sunlight but with this heat it's made our patio unusable until nearly 7pm

Personally, I think they look tacky. Can you buy an extra large market style umbrella and plant some trees, like a fast growing evergreen? It's not a quick fix, but the umbrella would help until the trees grow some.

Gosh, I really didn't want to use that word, but I feel the same way. Have you thought about a charming outdoor canopy instead? Use it seasonally.

OP. That's my fear too, but DH is on the hunt. Only umbrella he has found is part of a table/chairs set. Anyone have a link to something you'd recommend?

OP- almost all places with patio furniture sell umbrellas separately.

Pottery Barn
Target
etc.

[b]We just bought a house and are considering the same thing. Just want to say that I don't think they look tacky, especiially if the fabriic is a subtle color or modern print. I've seen neighbors with cheap tent like things from Home Depot, those look tacky to me!

Our deck has a southern exposure and was pretty much unusable because of the sun. We just had an awning installed, and it's like having an extra room in our house! It makes a huge difference. We used The Deck Awning Company in Gaithersburg. They were great.

Costco often has deals on awnings. Not sure who they use.

I don't think retractable awnings look tacky. We're moving to a house that really needs one.

My parents have one and it is great. My mom's only regret is that she didn't get one with an automatic sensor (to automatically retract when the wind picks up).

Awnings don't have to be tacky at all. In fact, before air conditioning became so widespread, many homes in Washington and the older suburbs used to have them, on south facing windows and porches. They kept things cooler, and are certainly a practical, greener alternative than the constant hum of air conditioners in the summer.

OP - we are in the same situation and my DH is also fixated on an awning. I thought they looked cheesy too, but I think they have come a long way and can look really nice these days.

Anyone else have recommendations for Awning companies?

Thanks!

We got a roof put on our patio (you could do it on a deck too). It's large enough for our dining and seating area. We have it wired and have a ceiling fan, recessed lighting, and speakers. It cost $6K and we are loving every minute of it! The ceiling fan keeps the mesquitos away too!

A company called Outdoor Carpentry and Design. I was really happy with the end result. They also stayed on their committed timeline and budget.
