Biking with baby

Does anyone have advice re: biking with a 9-mo old? I have seen those trailer type things that pull behind bike. Our older child (2) sits in a seat attached to back of bike. Pros & cons of these? Age-related reason to use one or the other? Thanks!

You really don't want them falling asleep in the seat on the back of their bike - very bad for their heads as they jiggle around. For that reason I would imagine a trailer might be better if you can find one that offers enough support.

A 9 month old is probably too young for a trailer. Most states have helmet laws, that apply in trailers, and the extra weight from the helmet coupled with the jiggling is too much for their necks. Ask your pediatrician if your child is physically ready. I would wait until s/he is at least a year.

It is a good idea to wait until they are one year. It can be a rough ride back there! Not to mention, that you will probably have a hard time fidning a small enough helmet. Our dd is 14 months and her helmet (the smallest size 24.5 inches) just started to fit.

Although I liked the concept of the bike attachment, we ended up getting a trailer since it seemed a lot safer (closer to the ground) in the event of a fall. We haven't used it much since she hates the helmet! You might want to start geting your kid used to wearing one!
