New to this - seems like everything is in upper NW?

We live on Capitol Hill but are realizing that we can't afford more space, which we need, so are considering the burbs. We want to stay close in, and are probably looking for a 2 bedroom townhouse. Most of those seem like they are in Virginia, but it really seems like the majority of the good schools are in upper NW and Maryland. I'm wondering if it just makes more sense to try and find something in that area to make the school commute easier.

Am I just uninformed? Are there excellent schools in the NOVA area that would work on a commute in? We are looking at the Del Ray area, etc. but just don't want to move there and then realize that our best school options are unattainable in terms of the drive...

Is there a reason why you are only looking at Private Schools?

I am not judging - just asking.

There are some wonderful public schools in the area and if you are looking for a 2 bedroom townhouse it would seem that it might be a stretch to pay for the Excellent Schools that you are looking at.

Seems like there are lots of townhouses on Capitol Hill and they are likely to be less expensive than NW or Bethesda. You could consider Capitol Hill Day School if you stay on the Hill. Families on the Hill also send children to Burgundy Farm, Potomac (I think the bus picks up on the Hill), and the NW schools. If you live in the burbs you should defintely consider public schools - Arlington, Bethesda, etc have excellent public schools.

There are two very good private schools near Del Rey - Alexandria Country Day School and St. Stephens St Agnes.
Potomac School also has bus service to Alexandria.

For religious schools, people seems to like Grace Episcopal, Immanuel Lutheran and Blessed Sacrament.

You should look at the good public schools in NoVa.

OP: ....are you looking for EXCELLENT - or people seem to like?

IMO the level of excellence is dependent on the child and family and expectations.

Been there, don that. I would highly advise against this, OP. I agree St Stephen's and St Agnes are good schools as is Potomac.

Why do you advise against the public schools in NOVA? I've seen this over and over again but do not get the real deal on why they are bad. We also are trying to make a decision and the public schools in VA look so much better than our DCPS. What am I missing?

You are missing nothing--there are many good public schools in VA.

This is just plain wrong. EXCELLENT public schools in NoVa. Look at the Falls Church City schools, e.g.

Arlington schools are usually wonderful as well and the class sizes are or were around 20.

In private schools class size will most likely max out at 16. This make a signifiant difference particularly in the lower grades.

Look at the Arlington County Public Schools or the Falls Church City Public Schools.
