cortsone shots for carpal tunnel

Could anyone share their experiences trying these to relieve carpal tunnel? Do you have to go to a special doctor or can a general practitioner do it?

My acupuncturist got rid of my carpal tunnel...and to keep it from coming back I stretch everyday and get deep tissue massages every other month from my fingers up to my neck.

It worked.

The big thing that helped was wearing wrist braces so that I stopped irritating my wrists by using them too much. The other thing that helped was giving birth..... and the passage of time.

PP here-

I should qualify the first sentence. Yeah, the shot helped the symptoms.

Was this CP that you got for the first time while pregnant?

it intensified with pregnancy, but was there before that. It most often flared up when I was stressed out at work and chained to my desk. The acu has helped tremendously, after about 4 sessions, my right felt as normal as my left. Now when I anticipate a heavy work week I step up on the stretching and get a massage after its over. I don't look at it as a luxury, but more as a necessity to keep me up and running for kids and career.

BTW, I know lots of people that get cortizone shots, and yes it does help the symptoms but it does not address the cause of the symptoms.

That's why I asked. The cause of pregnancy CP, if you didn't have it before, is different from regular and may respond to different treatments.

Mine went away after dd was about 3 months old (after I endured it for the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy). The orthopedist I saw, said that the cortisone shots are the last resort - try exercises and the brace before doing the shots. And give it time.

still rather get acupuncture for it than cortizone...pregnancy related or not. and what the pp said too.

I'm all for acupunture but I haven't come across any reason to avoid cortisone. Am I missing something?

Waiting it out isn't an option for me as long as the treatments don't risk the baby. I can't type, pick things up, or drive safely from the numbness.

I had minor carpal tunnel before pg, but then it got so bad during pg that I literally couldn't sleep due to the numbness and pain. Similar to pp, I couldn't type, pick things up, or even open a bottle of water.

I had almost no swelling in my feet towards the end of the pg, but my hands swelled. I ended up opting for a cortisone shot and my hands swelled pretty bad from the shot (supposedly only happens in a few cases), but then the pain went away and it was great. It did come back a little after giving birth, but eventually most of the symptoms went away.

I just avoid putting any kind of drug or steroid in my body if I can. If I can heal from it with acupuncture, then I see no need to take drugs/ shots, but that's just me.

For those of you who found relief with acupuncture, could you recommend your acupuncturist?

OP here, just wanted to share my experience for others in the same boat. My OB gave me a referral, I had the shots, one in each wrist. Within two days my hands and wrists were 98% better and have stayed that way for weeks now. I'm glad I did it.

(This is not to reject others' suggestions for acupuncture - this is just the only experience I have to relate.)

Can one of you please explain to me what carpal tunnel feels like? Is it in all the fingers or just some? It is painful or just annoying?

Can you "see" it (does your hand look different?) I've been having some issues with my right hand and thought maybe I was getting arthritis or something but maybe this explains it (have a 9 mo old).
