Highland Park-Overlee Knolls

Anonymous
There's a house we really like in this neighborhood--it seems to have the right combination of good schools, walkable to restaurants/shops (Westover), and a tiny bit more affordable than the neighborhoods farther north and east. But I've literally never heard anyone talk about this 'hood. Does anyone have any feedback?

Overlee Knolls is pretty nice. There are some decent houses, it's pretty close-in and you can walk to stuff. (Downside: the pool has a wait-list and a $3K fee to join.) The schools are considered good. I'd love to be able to walk to Westover - we looked at every house in my range there, but my range wasn't very large, so the houses weren't great. I don't know much about Highland Park - is it Highview park? I've heard that Highview park above Lee is ok, but some sketchy neighborhoods are in Highview south of Lee. Do you know what the schools are?

We used to live there and loved it. Great schools, walkable to Westover and EFC Metro. Sadly, we outgrew our little house. I think people don't talk about it because nobody actually calls it Overlee Knolls... other than in real estate listings or as the neighborhood list serve I never heard it called that the entire time I lived there.

OP here. Thanks for the feedback. What do people call it? If you live there and someone asks where you live, what do you say?

Other "areas" that I've seen in real estate descriptions that are close to Westover (and fall under that umbrella) are Parkhurst, Larchmont and Fostoria. But the Fostoria and Parkhurst houses I saw were both walkable to westover village, and the Larchmont house was farther East on Greenbrier off of Wash Blvd. the PP is right, though- I don't think most people call it Overlee Knolls unless they're talking about the pool. Chances are, if you say you're "3 blocks from Lost Dog," locals will understand.

I just bought a house in Country Club/Yorktown area and when I tell people that, they don't understand me, so I have to say "North of Lee Hwy just off George Mason."

In any case, a lot of people pay an awful lot of money to be walkable to Westover, so congrats if you end up buying!

... by sketchy, what that actually means is good investment if you like walkable and aren't racist (it is a historically black neighborhood), though parts of Highview Park aren't aesthetically pleasing. Considering that the location is walkable to the Metro, and it is in the Yorktown district, it is good esp for the house prices there.

I live nearby Glebewood and both locations are good (as is Glebewood- townhouses)- it really depends how much you are willing to spend. I'd prefer Highland Park/Overlee Knolls- Westover is great and it is close to EFC Metro.
