watermelon that actually tastes like watermelon

Anonymous
With all the genetically engineered foods out there, I feel like watermelon doesn't taste like it used to when I was a kid. I bought some this weekend, seedless, and it tastes like nothing. Not unripe, just no flavor. I'm going to try seeded next time (if I can even find it) and see if it has any more flavor. Has anyone noticed a difference with watermelon from farmers markets or fruit stands?

Absolutely, without a doubt, local fruit has more flavor than fruit bred for stability and shipped halfway across the country (or world).

The other advantage of farmer's markets/fruit stands is that they usually have samples so you can make sure it tastes good before you buy!

Oh definitely. You have to go to the farmer's market during peak watermelon season.

When do the farmer's markets around here have watermelon?

Usually mid to late July.

So I tried some watermelon from a farmers market. Definitely did have more flavor. But I'm not sure it was enough to justify the seeds. I mainly buy it for toddler DD, so cutting it into small pieces and making sure there aren't any seeds in them is a real PIA.

If peak season is mid to late July, maybe the grocery store melon will be better? Or maybe farmers market melon will be SO much better then that I won't mind the seeds!

You can get seedless ones at the farmer's market. They might have a bit less flavor than the seeded ones.

Not exactly the same question, but what's the deal with all the seeds (both white and black) in so-called "seedless" watermelon? (I, too, am cutting it up for a toddler and have to remove every single seed or she will point it out to me.)
