There is an article in today's NYTimes (yes, I am a transplated NYer and still read the Times) that discussed Mrs. Obama issues, background and the campaign's attempt to "reintroduce" her. I undertand that Obama's team needs to do what it takes to win, but i am a bit irked that they think Michelle needs to be rebranded?
Discuss amonst yourselves. Here is a link to the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/18/us/politics/18michelle.html?hp=&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1213801322-ZeTdNwdlab/Hy7KKBRrUDg |
I am bit irked as well. I think it is a waste of time trying to rebrand her because no matter what they do, she won't be acceptable to the people who are afraid of her and her husband. I'm old enough to remember Bill and Hillary coming to town, and how the press just HATED her for years.
Michelle Obama will have to overcome that, and the fact that she is unapologetically black, not by PR, but by being herself and letting them F#%k off it they don't like it! |
Why is it that people are afraid of educated and strong women? This goes for Hillary, Michelle Obama, ... do we want our daughters to be just wall flowers? |
Not afraid of a strong woman, no matter what color they are. Very afraid of what they stand for and what their primary goals are in the presidency. |
I would like to remind you that michele is not running for POTUS, she is the candidate's spouse. Lets assume that Obama wins, Michelle "goals" can only be accomplished if Obama agrees and pushes them and if the cabinet, congress, advisors and finally the public goes along. How far did Hillary get with her very ambitious goal for universal healthcare? Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. Michele is fine just the way she it - as least she is honest! |
I am not just irked. I am disheartened and disgusted - and, honestly, somewhat depressed.
She is being branded as the "anti-Hillary" - which tells me even more than ever how little the Obama camp understands or cares about actually uniting the party. So now, with Hillary's defeat and the oppressive misogyny that was so much a part of the "kill the bitch" campaign that contributed to that defeat, we have now devolved back to "I'm just a little old wife and mother who wears sundresses and certainly has no impact on my husband's decision-making" role model for our daughters. It's really depressing to watch. I don't know whether to feel sorry for Michelle or to hate her. |

I feel sorry for her. I am not a big fan of hers, but i can understand how tough it is to be thrown into the limelight. She is now a "celebrity", on the covers of tabloid magazines, and in the press. I can only imagine how I would present myself if I had to deal with the whole world watching me, people exaggerating and lying about my beliefs and personal life, etc. How are you supposed to act if you know the whole country is watching your every move? The pressure on her must be enormous. |
19:01, you said it all. I don't understand why Michelle would do this. I find it depressing too. |
. The reason is clear, she does not want to be the lightening rod for critiscism against the campaign and she want to see him become POTUS. It is still depressing and as a woman and a mother of a daughter it makes me worry about her future. |
Saw more of her time on the View today. She actually said, "It's fun to be pretty!"
Sigh. Now, perhaps if she had followed it up with, "And it kicks ass to be powerful!" I wouldn't have minded so much ![]() |
