help! caught doing non permited renovations in DC

Any words of advice? We got a stop work order and are scheduled to have the inspector come look at our basement on Tuesday. We had been doing some work w/o permits. Anyone been thru this? What was the visit from the inspector like? Thanks!

stop work, pay the fine, get permits (just guessing)

What kind of work is it that you need a permit? We've done remodeling in our basement twice without a permit, it didn't even occur to me that we would need one.

In general anything touching electrical, plumbing or structural requires permits. As well as changing your water heater or boiler.

If you are painitng, replacing the flooring you are fine.

How did you get caught? Did a nosy neighbor turn you in?

I'm not OP, so don't know how they got caught, but DCRA does have enforcers that drive around to look for signs of construction, kind of the way police patrol the streets.
