Solid wood doors, where to find them locally?

Anonymous

The doors to all of the upstairs bedrooms and bath are this lightweight particleboard or whatnot. I'm interested in replacing them with something more substantial. Ideally, I would be able to find affordable solid wood doors that can be stained to match the floorboards and door frame.

I've found some incredible things online but even when they are somewhat affordable, the shipping cost for these heavy items makes it impossible.

Any suggestions?

Someone once told me of a mythical place out along New York Avenue (?) that had a large collection of old wooden doors from area houses. $200 per. I haven't been able to find it. Anybody ever heard of this place?

Home Depot has them on the shelf that are reasonable but you either have to use your old framing or make/buy your own.

House of Doors in Alexandria is nice. I used them for both my outdoor doors in my old house.

The place you're thinking of is the Back Doors Warehouse. I got a bunch of solid wood doors there when I was finishing my basement a few years ago for about $40 a door. the address was 57 N St NW near NY ave but they closed this past Spring. Try calling The Brass Knob, they were owned by the same person, maybe they might be able to help you out.

You might also consider solid MDF doors, Home Depot/Lowes sell these, they are solid and come in a number of different looks, and are typically cheaper than wood doors. Also do not warp, making them ideal for bathroom doors.
