Elementary School-Aged Kids

My mother's a bitch! I'm going to cut off her breasts! I'm going to shove this knife up her ass!
Seriously, if your teen is mentally ill like this, my heart goes out to you. But the video does put some of my problems with my kids in perspective,,, |

| I like how the woman next to her is trying to read a book...la-la-la-la-la, I can't hear you... |
| I can't imagine filming someone else's child in crisis and then posting it on youtube. I'm assuming they didn't get either the child or the parent's permission here. |
| I wonder if someone called the cops?? |
| why does it look like she's reading from a book as she yells? |
| Is she a teen? Anyway, wow. Love how everyone just minds their own business. They should call the cops and the mental ward. Have her check in for eval, stat. I hope she didn't go home and hurt her mom. And then they find out this rant was recorded and no one did anything. |
| I can over hear someone making a phone call in the background--it sounds like they're trying to tell someone about what's happening, anyway. I don't know if any of you have ever been a captive audience in a situation like this--the young woman is being very threatening--the worse thing you could do would be to give her direct eye contact. What are the people on the train supposed to do? They are like hostages. The woman looks and sounds pretty young maybe not a teen but not much older. No, she isn't reading from a book, I don't think--the woman next to her is trying to avoid eye contact by reading. |
| I wonder if there were any little kids on this train. I used to see people like this on the street all the time in the 80's when Reagan/Bush cut off the disability funding for the chronically mentally ill. Most of those people are probably just dead now--from exposure to extreme weather or drug overdose. Shucks, why didn't they just pick themselves up by their "bootstraps"? |

I used to live in NYC. Scenes like this are memorable, but not necessarily uncommon. I agree with PP about how so many mentally ill people were sent to the streets by Reagan without adequate safety systems in place for them. Some died, some now live in our prison systems, and others limp along (or scream and shout like this young woman). There are very few resources for families of the mentally ill. No one really pays attentions to their pleas until their DS or DD (or DH or DW) kills someone and then everyone comes down on a ton of bricks about why the families did not do more.
Breaks my heart. |
Agreed. Not even remotely funny. |
| I have a close friend, ironically who lives in NYC, who has a mentally ill son who had serious impulse control. When he was angry with her, he could say some really ugly things. He is now 21 and much calmer - I think most of his "issues" where he would rant like the boy in the video occurred when he was young and petered down by the time he was 18 or so. Very sad to see that this mother also has to deal with this. You notice how calm she is? She is not fueling the fire that is already lit. |
