Cherry Cabinets. Which Hardwood Stain Color Would You Pick?

Anonymous
We just moved to a house that has cherry colored kitchen cabinets. We are installing hardwood floors and deciding on a stain color. Are we stuck with having to pick a cherry colored hardwood floor, or will some other stain color clash with the existing cabinets? Any suggestion with which color would go well with cherry cabinets?

Hard to say...depends on the look you're going for, style of cabinets, etc. Also, what type of wood you're using for the floors-- is there graining that will look darker in some places? Maybe a similar tone to the cabinets so that the darker part of the floor wood picks up the cabinets' color?

Either way, you're going to need to do alot of test pieces!

I'm building a house right now and my husband and I love dark stain on wood floors like a walnut but we love cherry cabinets and we feel that too much dark would not look good. I also feel that you should stay away from anything cherry on the floor or it will look too matchy. I find that the best kitchens have a contrast like a natural floor with dark cabinets or dark stained floors with light cabinets so we are in a dilemma also because we don't like natural floors but we love cherry cabinets. I dont know if you like light tones on the floor I think that's the best bet. Otherwise I would go for something a few shades lighter with no red tones like minwax special walnut.

It's pretty common to have cherry cabinets and blond wood floors.

Can you get samples for the floor finishes and bring them home to see? I would lean towards something that is lighter or darker than the cabinets, but that is reddish.

depends on what your walls look like

Ours is a 1960s home with that random brick wall on the interior and a rather large window that -sadly - doesn't let in much light.. Aside from painting the brick white, we went with lighter floors and painted the walls a white, too. (There's also paneling, which we'll get to by painting over it - lovely . . . ).

So you want to make sure you don't go too dark if the kitchen is dark in general.

I would avoid cherry floors as it would definitely look too matchy. You could go darker or lighter, just make sure you stay in same family of the undertones. Since cherry usually has a reddish undertone, I wouldn't pick anything that has yellow or brown undertones.
