I will be 50 in a few months so I guess I qualify for this forum.
Now that my kids are in HS/college and I am not as tied to their schedules (and full time work) my goal is to start exercising again. I USED to be in pretty good shape. I may join a health club to take classes. Any recommendations for types of classes you like? I am trying a circuit class right now that is pretty good. What other things do you do for exercise? |
| I don't exercise, because my kids are in MS and HS. So at least I understand why you haven't been exercising. But so far that's all I can offer! |

Former trainer and mom of teenagers here. My advice:
- Visit a few gyms, and try to imagine yourself working out there. What's important to you? Late hours? Not too crowded? Fancy locker rooms? No loud music? Visit at the times you think you are most likely to go; gyms can be quite different at different times. - Most reputable places will offer you a trial membership or at least a guest pass. Definitely use it before you sign anything - I find I'm most likely to go to a gym that's either close to home or work. Is there parking? How will you get there? - Don't be intimidated by the gym scene. Find out if they offere a free or reduced price personal training session or a package, and resist all effort to make you sign up for a lot of sessions before you find someone you're comfortable with. - I highly recommend that you take at least 2 weight training classes a week. WSC offers total body conditioning, and most clubs have a similar type class. Don't be intimidated, just let the instructor know you're new and he or she should provide modifications or at least encouragement to do as much as you can, but not overdo it at first. - Don't be afraid to ask about mysterious gym equipment. That's how you learn. And it's not just for guys. Take your time, try and go regularly, and enjoy! |
| Thanks! Very helpful. |

I think you need to consider three types of exercise:
1. Aerobic: walking, biking, running, exercises classes at gym 2. flexibility: yoga is great for this 3. strength/weights I go to our local Y for yoga and weights and run on my own. |
| I agree with the PPs about getting the strength and weights in there. I was sticking with almost all cardio and was afraid of the weights. A few months ago I totally switched it up and added strength classes and am getting so much more out of my gym time. |
| I am also 6 months shy of 50 and need to shed about 40 pounds that I gained in the last 5 years because of lifelong bad eating habits that finally caught up with me (yes, that makes me an "old, haggard, ugly, out-of-shape DCUM FATTY!). I have young high schoolers and work only part time. I just signed up with a trainer for 2 30 min sessions a week, and it makes a big difference. I used to do weights on my own, but I never pushed myself, and probably didn't do the exercises properly. She is very motivating. Highly recommend if you can afford it. Then you can squeeze in a little cardio while you're at the gym, and more cardio or classes on other days. Good luck! |
Play ICE hackey...
|
I'm 51 and I can't wait to start playing ice hockey! I've spent a decade carting DS and DD around doing the travel hockey scene. When DS goes off to college in a couple of years I plan on scrounging up some equipment and start playing. It looks like so much fun! Hockey wasn't on my radar screen when I was growing up ( and probably wouldn't have been available to us girls, anyway. Don't get me started on that!) |
Sincere question -- hackey (like hackey sack) or hockey? |
I took up martial arts in my 40s and I like it because it works on flexibility/core strength as well as some cardio (but no weights, except for pushups ). It also interests me enough to get me to go to classes, which for me is the biggest issue.

Ohhh I don't want to hear this. I got my ACL repaired after 30 years (back in the 70s when I blew out my knee playing field hockey they told me to give up twisty turny sports but now they have the technology to fix it) and really wanted to try ice hockey but I started worrying about tearing it again. So I took up rowing instead. But it looks like a blast! I'm jealous of you pps! |
