| My husband and I are looking at a home in the Mass. Ave. Heights area (from out of town), and I was wondering what that area is like? Are there families around the area? Can you walk to some shops? Are there fun things in the area? What other neighborhoods and things are close by? Any insight would be helpful. |

OP again-- one other question. The other area we're looking at is Georgetown. Any insight into the difference between these two sections would be helpful. I know that Georgetown is more commercial and more crowded (in terms of houses being right next to each other). I love Georgetown, but I am surprised at how little you get for your money (even millions of dollars!). But the community may make it worth living there...
Thoughts? |

Mass Ave Heights is really N. Cleveland Park (the Cathedral area) - is that where you're looking? It's a very nice neighborhood with tons of kids (though they all go to private school), nice playgrounds, good restaurants, Giant, Starbucks, etc...
Gtown is gorgeous. Great parks there as well - tons of kids (they also go to primarily private schools). My pick would be gtown because it's more walkable and I just really like the houses. One thing to consider: neither area has a metro. (They do have bus lines) |
| OP here- yes, it's near the Cathedral |

Very pretty neighborhood; short walk to a nice playground at Guy Mason and Whole Foods. We looked at a house on Observatory Circle, and the owner told us there were many families in the area. Walkable to Georgetown (perhaps not for a small child). No Metro, but there is a decent bus line that runs from Friendship Heights downtown via Massachusetts.
This is NOT North Cleveland Park, by the way; N. Cleveland Park runs from around Van Ness to Albemarle, between Conn and Wisconsin/Nebraska. |
As PP mentioned, this is NOT N.Cleveland Park, but more like South or West Cleveland Park. I left this neighborhood last August, after living there for 7 years, and am really regretting my decision to move and sell our house (we decided to move to Chevy Chase). I LOVED this neighborhood. As pp noted, there's Guy Mason Park, which is a great park, in walking distance, as well as the shops of Glover Park. Then just up Wisc there's Cafe Deluxe and the Giant, and the little stores there, including Sullivan's toy store, which is a great toy store. And, supposedly, there should be a nice new Giant, and new development with new stores and such, within a year or so. There's also the Macomb Playground which is great. And you're also walking distance to the Zoo, as well as the Conn Ave commercial zone. And then there's the Cathedral, with all its lovely green space, and festivals and activities, and it's lovely charming bells on Sunday... It's a great neighborhood, with lots of kids. As I said before, I really miss it...

No, Cleveland Park includes 2 Amys, Cactus and all of those stores. |
| Cleveland Park, yes. North Cleveland Park, no. |
| Love georgetown. Completely walkable, very friendly, lots of great preschools, great playgroups, plenty of good parks. |

If you are planning on using the dc public schools - do some research on the elementary schools that you are looking into.
Some have larger pre k programs due to available space in the school. For example - it is my understanding that Janney had room for 9 students this year while Laffayette has 4 classes. |
What does this mean? Is one better than the other? |
OP here- It sounds like you'd pick this area over Georgetown. Is that true? Could you tell me why? Do you find the Cleveland Park/Mass Ave Heights area more convenient? Like having a real yard? I love Georgetown, but I admittedly don't know much about the other areas. Given that homes in both are very expensive, what do you prefer about this area over Georgetown? Thanks in advance. |
| I was responding to the PP. 2 Amys and so on are in Cleveland Park, not North Cleveland Park. Both good neighborhoods. Cleveland Park is significantly more expensive. |
I see...what is the consensus about Mass Ave Heights, then? Is it close to Cleveland Park or easily confused as part of it? We're looking at the Woodland Rd. area. |
| Actually, I was responding to the PP's correction, which seemed to be based on a misreading of the quoted post...but never mind about that! Both good neighborhoods, although I much prefer Cleveland Park. |
