Athletic scholarships?

Anonymous
Rising 10th grade DS wants to play his sport in college. I have no idea how to go about researching this. Does anyone have any experience or can you steer me toward a helpful website? I can't even figure out which colleges offer scholarships for his sport. It's not an obvious one (football, baseball, etc). Where to begin?

Oh yes! We would like to know, too. What would be the best website that lists all U.S. colleges/universities that provide scholarships for athletics? We are mainly interested in la crosse and ice hockey. It seems a bit confusing to me.

Why don't you just search Division I or III for your sport and see what pops up? You might have to contact each college to see if they actually recruit and offer financial support. Good luck!

First if it is confusing to you and you have not heard from a college-chances are they would need to walk on because your child would be aorund others going through this. Not that that is needed but many kids at that high level have been to camps or playing in AAU or in that environment.

Well, it is a difficult request. I have not seen any master list of schools that offer scholarships in a sport. That may be because what type of aid a student gets is up to the schools. Just bear in mind that NCAA D1 and D2 schools can give scholarships and so can NAIA schools. NCAA D3 does not give athletic scholarships although they can put together aid packages for leadership and academic activities. In my DD’s case, I researched and looked at the NCCA’s websites for each Division. I also looked at the following sites to get information. A couple of these are paid services, but I used the free portions as part of my research. Good luck.

You should also talk to the coach/club. And you should start looking for college showcases, camps at colleges, etc.

PP here. This is only useful if the coach/club can be helpful. If so, that is great, but there are a lot of club "coaches" in this area that do not have the info or the contacts to be helpful. If her DC plays for a club that has a track record of its kids playing in college, I would talk to them but I would not let the club coach drive the process. If the DC is a rising sophmore and currently plays for a club - and there has been no mention of showcases and such from the coach, I am not sure that club coach is plugged in.

As far as the camps and showcases, that is a good idea AFTER the OP understands how the process works and has a basic knowledge of the recruting process.

Personally, I belivee that the parent has to do whatever they need to do to educate themselves on how this works. That is why I provided links that detail the basic information. Heck, before you even get to the schools, I think you have to look at the different levels of college athletics to see where the DC would fit in.

Thanks PP! I was not tuned in at all to sports in college. Or, after college for that matter, so I have no idea how this works. I really appreciate the websites you provided. It does seem ridiculous that there isn't a master list somewhere. Now I can spend the time I would normally spend on DCUM on college sites.

As you may realize, NCAA Division I and Division II institutions, and some NAIA and NJCAA institutions are offer athletics scholarships.

We found a lot of useful books on amazon re: athletic recruiting. It worked for us -- dd was recruited for DI rowing.
