WHAT is up with Founding Farmers??

Anonymous
Every time I'm planning an evening out, I check Open Table for a reservation at Founding Farmers. And have never once found one available. For example, this Saturday is totally booked. They're offering Friday, at 4:30 or 9:30.

Have you been? Is it THAT great? It's been around for a couple years now... What's the deal?

Everyone LOVES it at my office. I don't get the hype. It's pretty good, but it's not THAT good. For lunch if you book a week out you're fine. Try a little farther in advance.

I have no idea. It isn't great. But I guess the surrounding area is a bit of a wasteland for good drinks/eating establishments (I like the bar at Kincaid's but the ambiance isn't great). Looks like there is a new place opening on the circle though.

I'm going tomorrow at a reasonable time. Made the reservation on OT about two weeks ago. It's good, but not that good. I like their drinks.

I am not pressed to go back. We tried to go one morning for brunch without a reservation and ended up elsewhere because it was a 90 minute wait. On another weekend I decided to book through Open Table, for breakfast again. I was really disappointed. I think the concept is cool but the service is mediocre and the food in my opinion isn't that great, but we've only had breakfast food there.

Yeah, Kinkead's is okay. FF is overrated. I actually prefer Ted's Bulletin on Barracks Row or Tabard Inn if I book WAAAAAY in advance.

No, not at all. I have no idea what the fuss is about. Ris, about 4 blocks away, is a little more expensive but FAR superior.

It's not super-great--but it is really the only place in this neighborhood that is at the right mix of formal and casual and with a wide-ranging menu that generally pleases all eaters, so it's a go-to spot for lunch/dinner for the world bank & gwu staff in the neighborhood.

It's not that great. Good, but not super-amazing. However, if you do end up going, I highly recommend the cranberry-cucumber drink.

sometimes restaurants dont list peak times on open table. try calling them instead.

I booked a table for 7 there pretty last minute not too long ago. OT showed very late availability, but when I called they were able to accommodate us at a better time, so I second the suggestion you call.

I have been dying to try FF since it opened, and finally went there recently for a work lunch. It is amazing to me how unhealthy it is. If the chicken is free range but you fry it and serve it with waffles that look like they have about 3,000 calories in them, I have no idea what benefit local and organic does in that context. But then again I liked Rock Creek and it closed, so maybe most people want to think they are eating cleanly/greenly without actually doing it.

The sister restaurant, Farmers + Fishers is still closed in G'town due to the flood and now renovations. So, people who went there are vying to get into FF...with all of the people who already went to FF. We couldn't get a reservation until 8:15 last night...on a Sunday! It was jam-packed. I agree with an earlier poster that said to call instead of using Open Table...I have done that many times. My office is next door. The only time you can get in without reservations is for weekday breakfasts. I take a lot of folks there.

I agree it's not the "be all and end all" ...but it does have a lot of buzz and hype. It's not that cheap either!

Drinks are good.

The food and service leave something to be desired. THere are plenty of much better restaurants out there, IMO.
