s/o--is Frost MS going to be expanded/renovated?

Anonymous
The proposed Annandale HS boundary changes are going to make the overcrowding at Frost worse than Annandale's was in the first place. Does anyone know if an expansion/renovation is planned for Frost to deal with that situation? Someone mentioned there might be one on the other thread but I can't find any info about this online.

If the School Board adopts the Staff's recommendation, there would be a modular addition at Frost to deal with the current overcrowding and the additional students from Wakefield Forest ES currently attending Poe MS. I don't believe it would affect when Frost otherwise might be renovated.

Frost is also scheduled to be renovated in the latter half of the decade, with the intention that the capacity be increased to support the capacity of Woodson.

Chances are the SB will make significant changes. Lots of unhappy parents and strong desires to keep Wakefield at AHS.

There are always some unhappy parents. There are also some parents who are very happy with the balance struck here.

What changes would still achieve the shared goal of relieving overcrowding at Annandale?

PP here - not saying I don't like the changes, I actually do. Just saying that from what I have heard, including posts here, there are SB members who don't want WF leaving AHS.

Did anyone attend or listen to the School Board meeting last night? Were there any indications as to how the School Board members felt about the Staff recommendation?

Yes. Start watching at 2:00:00 where Bradsher, Evans, and Gibson (in particular) pose questions.

Cant view it on my computer... were those three skeptical? I would assume so.

I listened and found the questions fairly muted. My take-away is that the School Board may toss a bone to the "Pine Spring island" and keep it at Pine Spring rather than move it to Beech Tree, even though it doesn't really make any sense to have that attendance island. Otherwise, they seemed to just be going through the motions of asking a few questions to show they read the materials.

so they didn't seem to challenge the wakefield change? That surprises me, I had always heard that no way would the rest of wakefield go to woodson.

Evans mentioned concern about AHS losing "energy" and the need to maintain a "strong and vibrant school." Those were oblique references to moving WFES out of AHS. Tessie Wilson refrained from commenting, though I'm sure she will in later sessions.

Hone and Evans expressed displeasure that the nonboundary option was not given more consideration.

I haven't listened to the whole meeting yet.

People said they wanted to relieve overcrowding at Annandale and not drive up the ESOL/FRL percentages there too much. The Staff recommendation largely achieves that goal, by redistricting both Wakefield Forest and Bren Mar out of Annandale. Wakefield Forest has lower ESOL/FRL numbers than Annandale as a whole, but Bren Mar also has higher ESOL/FRL numbers than Annandale as a whole. The net effect on the Annandale numbers turns out not to be that significant.

While some School Board members could challenge the decision to move the Wakefield Forest kids to Annandale, it might invite a discussion that people otherwise might prefer not to have about the fact that Staff is doing Annandale a favor by moving the Bren Mar kids to Edison (which, in turn, can't really complain because it has lower ESOL/FRL numbers than Annandale and is also under-enrolled).
