Hello All,
We are in Lodoun We got the Cogat results for my 2nd grader and it does not look great. She was placed in the 87th percentile(composite). She is a very bright kid (parent pride not talking ), and I am very surprised she did not do well.
Anyway, the question being - does she have any chance of making up with NNAT and getting into GT ? More than the "my kid got in" aspect, I am worried it will impact her confidence even further. I would truly appreciate it if you all can provide your input. Thanks ! |
| Don't tell her the scores and it won't impact her confidence. My DC had no idea about AAP until after she was in. We never discussed the tests and scores in front of her -- and she had to take the WISC, which she was told was a test to figure out how she learns best. |
| Good advice PP. Please listen to her/him OP. |
| Thank you ! |
| Since it is not the composite of the CogATs that determines district pool, but each section (you need 2 above 97% to be placed in the pool). How did she do in the Nonverbal section? That is most like the NNAT and should give you an idea. I know a child that got 99% on both CogAt nonverbal (composite was lower) and hen again got a 99% on the NNAT. Also the teacher/search teacher report and student portfolio are just as important as test scores. Many kids with high test scores do not get in because the other two sections are lower. Futura is very different from other GT programs, so the criteria for acceptance is also very different. |
| My son also got 87 percentile with 118 composite score. He did well in Nonverbal and quatitative ...95 and 85 percentile but goofed in verbal! Anyhow...discussed it with him and he like any other 7 yr old just brushed it aside and is now off to play! He has been doing well in school and has O's in all subjects but didnt shine in Cogat. Well, I would say that this is just a test...but still of course like any other parent I want him to do well and would work on parent referral. Lets see what happens! Any idea of average Cogat score in LCPS this year? |

Thanks Anonymous1 for the details. She scored a 95 in non verbal. I don't know if there is a way to get an idea what the Search teacher put in the report. Is there a website to understand the Search program better ? Her school website has some info, but not much. Your reply really helped, thank you.
Anonymous2 : I cannot believe how similar my daughter and your son's scores are ! She got a 95 in non verbal and 83 in quantitative. And she did exactly what you said - I tried in a very nice way telling her that she should take things more seriously, she agreed and forgot about it in a few mins .

Hi there,
Anonymous 11:08 here again... Check this out for more information on Futura: http://cmsweb1.lcps.org/5093051015625/blank/browse.asp?a=383&BMDRN=2000&BCOB=0&c=104612&5093051015625Nav=|&NodeID=6146 You should know more information about your child and Futura when she is in third grade. That is when the process begins. NNAT scores come home in January and letters if they are in the district pool come shortly after that. You can also get a feel from her classroom teacher if he/she thinks Futura might be a good fit for her. That is also when the teacher/search teacher begins working on their portfolio. Some of the items in there are assignments that they specifically do at school to assess them for Futura. But since she had a 95% on the nonverbal section of the CogAT, the NNAT is a good test for her. |
| I agree with all the PPs. Definitely check out the LCPS website for more information about the program. I just want to add that you should have two % scores, one for age and one for grade. They will take whatever is higher. So an older child's grade % would be higher and a younger child's age% would be higher. |

Most schools will consider entrance into their G&T programs each year. If your child excels in their academics, they will be reviewed for entrance in G&T.
G&T in elementary school is meaningless, you could probably get a better program in the summer at a specialized camp. My son had a 73 percentile in verbal, but with a 99 and 93 in quantitative and nonverbal, he had no trouble getting into G&T math (which is just an hour pullout once per week in elementary). If you really think your child is "brighter than their standardized test score", it might be wise to get them familiar with taking multiple choice tests, and how to pick and choose which questions to answer first. It will serve them up to and including college. |
| Any idea about what the average scores were this year? |
| DC got 98th percentile composite but 93 on nonverbal. I am going to get my hands on the NNAT D Series practice guide and some sort of pattern matrices practice workbook. |
| OP, This forum is predominantly answered by/helpful for FCPS parents. If the same topic had been about FCPS your forum would be running for 10 pages. Try to look more info on city data forum or something like that. |
| My child took NNAT in her first grade. her scores were decent but not 99%. She will take Cogat in 2nd grade in a few months. This time around I am going to prep her. We didn't do that last year. There are books on Amazon and from based on some other posts here, I have ordered the 4 Pracice tests for Cogat book. Will post a follow up once I receive it. |
