Hot pretzels

Anonymous
Can anyone recommend places with great hot pretzels? We loved the pretzels at eastern market, but we rarely go there. Mall pretzels aren't something I like. We're in Bethesda. Thanks!

Most brewpubs have them on their appetizer menus. Cap City, etc.

Rock Bottom in Bethesda has really good pretzels as an appetizer.

So you prefer a pretzel that came into the bar frozen in a box over one made fresh?

No

But the first two suggestions were bar/tavern type places that more then likely get them in frozen/pre-baked and just throw them in the oven to heat.

Yes I know that and I suggested Rock Bottom. The OP asked for a place to get good pretzels and I told her one, specifically in the locations he suggested. That does not mean that I think they are the best pretzels around, just that it is a place that might meed her needs. And Auntie Ann's pretzels are "fresh" in the mall. They are nasty. So if we are talking about those pretzels versus the potentially frozen ones at RB, then yes, I prefer frozen.

Auntie Ann's are horrible, but they are better then a SuperPretzel

you need to go to Philly

Honestly, I haven't had a good hot pretzel in years. Costco used to have good ones but they no longer do. Yes, probably frozen, but they were soft and tasty.

Even the last couple of times I've been to New York, the pretzels I had on the street were AWFUL. And don't even get me started on the cardboard mall pretzels.

I guess I'll have to try PP's suggestion and go to Philly!

They're not that difficult to make at home...

Really? I've found them to be hard. To get a good crust on a pretzel it seems you need food-grade lye, which isn't something I have hanging around. I've tried baking soda but not that successfully. What recipe do you use?

The Amish market in Annapolis makes them fresh. It's fun to watch them toss them! I know there's an Amish market in Burtonsville too. Are there others in the DC area?

I actually like the superpretzel frozen ones -- the secret to me is honey mustard dressing!

The Amish Market in Germantown makes them fresh. So delicious!

Heidelberg Bakery on Lee Hwy in Arlington makes wonderful ones. Also laugen broetchen, if you want your pretzel fix in roll form.
