I know many smart, educated Mormons and I just don't get how/why they've drunk the Kool Aid...
|
Come on. Do you really think bashing another's religion is okay? Go away. |
And 3...2...1...
Wait for it.... |
There are plenty of smart, educated deists. What makes Mormons different from the rest of them? |
Me neither. And please, tell me what's in it for the women? |
Many people are able to compartmentalize. They keep a part of their brain for rational thought and everyday matters, and wall off another part for magical golden writing in the "reformed Egyptian" language etc.
I think it helps if you realize that in evolutionary terms we are not that far removed from apes. People cling to the magical thinking that characterized previous generations, and it allows them to fall prey pretty easily to hucksters like Joseph Smith, L. Ron Hubbard and their antecedents in Islam and Christianity. |
Yeah, it is just that the Mormon story seems so much more far fetched than some other religious "stories". This dude, Joseph Smith was led to these golden plates by the angel Mornoni and the ONLY witnesses to these plates existence are Joseph's father, brothers and brothers in law....and let's not even get started on the crazy shit in the book of Mormon, like how Indians and Africans were "cursed" with a dark skin, because being white is clearly better (for any religion started in the US pre Civil war) |
And how Jesus Christ walked on this continent. Please, child. It's enough to make this agnostic an atheist. |
mormonism is basically a cult. Joseph Smith and the other founders were convicted felons, who were in it for the money, power and the young women. the book of mormon is so full of things that are completely factually untrue as to not be taken seriously in the least. and that is taking into account "faith". i.e., the new testament is full of faith as well, but the foundation is historically sound - there was a jewish rabbi named jesus who was executed by the romans. |
I don't get it either. Esp for the women. |
I like this:
At one early point in Mormon history, Smith claimed to have a revelation from God to establish a bank in Kirtland Ohio. He became the cashier for the bank (which was never licensed by the state of Ohio) and told his followers that God promised him the bank would never fail. It ultimately did fail, however, bankrupting many members of the church who lost everything they had. |
women get to have sister wives. The master wife, 2nd wife....
the man gets to lie with each one |
Well, modern day Mormons do not condone polygamy. Those are the fundamentalist nutsos, but the Mormon church in general is still crazy and cultlike. |
And they don't explain the Trinity in quite the same way as Catholics, Episcopalians and Protestants... |
What a nasty post, OP. Are you a bigot about every religion you don't "get" or are you just bringing this up because there are a couple of possible republican presidential candidates who are mormon? I happen to be a liberal democrat and whichever your reason, I'm appalled. |
