need help with strength training regimen

Anonymous
I have no idea what I'm doing. I had success YEARS ago with some personal training but that was pre-kids. Should I get DVDs? Join a gym and get a trainer? Do a boot camp? I desperately want to get into shape but I just am overwhelmed by how to get started and feel like I need a program. Also am a little concerned about cost (but could swing some cost). For boot camps, I worry that even though they start early, not early enough since I'm usually on my way to work by 730.

FWIW, I do yoga, cardio and am familiar with strength training just don't have a regimen.

Thanks!

Pick up any fitness magazine (Shape, Fitness, etc...). They all have roadmaps.

Check out a Body Pump class. Do this 2-3 times a week and it would be a great addition to what you already do.

Body Pump changed my life. I am not exaggerating. It is magic.

Is there a Body Pump DVD? I used to do BP about 10 years ago and it WAS magic. But it was in Baltimore, and it was a class at the gym. I'd love to have a DVD at home that I could use. Can anyone recommend one?

Ugh, body pump is very old school - you can increase your chance of injuries doing some of what they do. Look at cross fit instead.

14:09 here. It may be old school, but I looked fabulous! Of course, I was also ten years younger. Still looking for DVD recs if anyone has them...

when did body pump become old school? Nobody has told that to the hordes of people who line up to take it at my gym. For some classes you need a reservation. I have been doing it for 3 years and have never had an injury, although I agree that if you do not have correct form the opportunity to get injured is there.

I have learned alot from Total Body Conditioning at WSC.

I would start out with either a Jillian Michaels or Jackie Warner DVD, and get 5, 8, and 10 pound weights. That would probably be the lowest cost, most convenient option for you to begin with.

I belong to gold's and booked a few sessions with a trainer to learn some new moves because my old ones were getting stale. I got a package of 3 30-minute sessions, plus a free session. I'm in good shape, but he had me so sore I could barely move for a few days afterward! If you don't want to join a gym, you could probably buy a trial membership to get access to the trainer. I've also gotten really good feedback about P90X; might be worth checking out.
