local(ish) meats: where can I buy year-round withOUT joining a club/pickup system?

I am a fan of just about everything related to Poly-Face Farms with the the big exception of actually obtaining the meat. Too time-consuming, forced to purchased more than I need (or not what I need), etc. I just want to be able to pop in and buy a steak because I feel like it on a Thursday.

I don't want to commit to a 1/2 side of beef 4 mos. in advance, or pick out a calf, or purchase 11 chickens to be delivered all at once 7 days from now.

I know there are other farms-vendors working with a similar Poly-Face ethos in the mid-Atlantic. Do any of you know of a regular marketplace to purchase these meat/poultry products? I want to be able to talk with the proprietor if needed.

Working backward ... the most convenient location would be NW DC, then Bethesda-Silver Spring, then down the Red Line ending at Dupont. Eastern Market is really too far, so.

Dupont Circle farmer's market? Lots of local meat vendors there, but they are only open Sunday mornings. (Also not sure what you mean by NW DC--do you mean west of the park?

There's a very comprehensive guide here:

Kensington Farmer's market on Sat and Takoma Park farmer's market on Sun both have meat sellers. Sometimes Kensington just has bison though.

A lot of farmers' markets have meat vendors. The downtown Silver Spring one on Ellsworth is year-round on Saturdays from 9-1, and the Takoma Park one on Carroll is on Sundays from 10-2. Each of them have two or three meat vendors. Groff's at the Silver Spring market sells chicken parts (breasts or thighs, etc.), which is nice for us and less common than whole chickens. Most farmers' markets have websites listing their vendors and hours, so you could see if there's one with meat vendors closer to you.

I agree that farmer's markets are your best bets. Obviously not convenient for you, but we frequent the Falls Church farmer's market and I think there are 3-4 regulars there selling bison, beef, pork, lamb and chicken products, as well as a vendor selling homemade sausages.

As others have suggested, Dupont Circle market has the largest selection. But, you might want to consider ordering from BonVivant Company - they will deliver to your door, and you don't need to get huge quantities.

South Mountain Creamery has meats of all kinds and they deliver to your door once a week. There is a delivery fee. Get on their website and see what they are offering. We aren't big meat eaters, but everything we ever buy from them has been great. They are also local and organic.

This is a bit far for you, but if you find yourself in the area: Westover Market in Arlington (on Washington Blvd close to Falls Church) has a butcher that sells only "pasture raised, "beyond organic" meats to consumers. All animals are raised humanely on small family farms throughout the Shenandoah Valley." Really great stuff.

Polyface Farm sells their meat by retail cuts through Eco-Friendly Foods year-round at the Arlington Farmer's Market in Courthouse.

If you have a car and want to trek out once or twice a month, the Amish Market in Germantown has a great selection of meats that they all claim to raise themselves. (I'm not sure if this is true anymore; it used to be but i suspect they use some suppliers now.) The meat is beautiful and really cheap.

Both the Columbia Heights and Mt. Pleasant Farmer's Markets have local meat purveyors (beef, pork, chicken, lamb) that compare favorably to Polyface. At the end of the season (typically Thanksgiving) I stock the freezer to get me through tne next 5 months (or close to it).

I used to do the Polyface delivery, but they make it so darn inconvenient. Plus, the political views of Joel Salatain always left a bad taste in my mouth (not the food related views, obviously).

The Wine Shop in Adams Morgan on 18th sells meat from White House meats. I think they have most popular cuts.
