Gifted and Talented Designation

Anonymous
We got a letter from MCPS indicating that our rising 3rd grader had met the criteria for "gifted and talented" designation. In practical terms, what does this mean? We're happy with the level of instruction she is getting at her school already and are not sure what this designation will mean. We're reluctant to label and I wonder if others will know of this designation and if anything in the school day will change as a result?

Did you ask the school how they came to that conclusion? Did you have her tested, because I thought the kids weren't tested until 3rd grade. Truly curious, admittedly I'm new to the area so I'm still learning MCPS.

My understanding is that all of the 2nd graders were tested sometime this spring (Inview and Raven are the test names). Our form letter informing us of the results came yesterday. The letter mentioned that teacher comments and placement in reading in math were considered in addition to the test.

PS I noticed another thread related to this topic (which I had missed b/f posting).
