End of year gift for teacher?

Anonymous
Did you give your DC's teacher(s) an end-of-year gift? This is the first year there has not been some kind of class gift organized and I'm not sure if I should do something on my own or not. Is it no longer appropriate or expected to give the teacher a gift past a certain grade? If I should, what kind of gift or price range? (Elementary school.) TIA.

My DD brought her teacher homemade cookies in a nice tin. She also made an arrangement of daisies and roses from our garden. I think any gift you give should be humble and simple. You don't want to look like a brown noser. Have you DC make something.

I think that a teacher would appreciate anything that shows that you and/or your child thought to say thank you, even if it is just a hand-made card. However, if it's a teacher who really went above and beyond and you want to recognize that, I see no problem with an actual gift.

I wrote a note and included a gift card to target. For aftercare, specials and of course the promary teachers.

My child had a fabulous year and I wanted to thank everyone who helped make it that way.

This comes up at every gift-giving opportunity. As an elem teacher, I can say that while a gift card or tangible present is appreciated and thoughtful, the best gifts I have ever received from parents and students were heartfelt notes of appreciation for the effort and time I have given to the children.

If your DC's teacher is relatively young (read: still building a portfolio, not quite as "established" as a veteran) a note detailing something specific about your child's growth in the classroom, or a special thing the teacher did to make a difference with your child, etc. sent to the teacher AND principal is a wonderful gift. Everyone loves presents, but really the best gift for a teacher is acknowledgement of a job well done.

What types of teacher gifts are given in middle school and high school when a student may have 7 or more teachers?

Honestly, all I would like is a note from the student.

DH teaches middle school and got a few gift cards this year (maybe 10 all together?), mostly for $10-$25. The higher amounts were from students who he knew specifically loved his class/subject, so I'm not sure they gave that amount--or anything at all--to every single teacher.

When I was a kid, I made some cookies and gave them to the teachers I liked the best. Everyone else got ignored!
