| Looking for some opinions here. I plan to quit my job later this summer before my third baby arrives. I have a week long vacation planned with my family about three weeks prior to my planned end date at work (i.e., I would vacation, then be back at work for three full weeks). Is it tacky to take vacation when your end date is three weeks away? Of course I'll make the time to complete all my current projects and to do all the administrative tasks required, even if it means coming in extra hours after my vacation. It's a rare opportunity to vacation with my parents and all my siblings. With all our kids we rarely are able to all get together so I don't want to miss it. It's really too late to quit my job before the vacation given the committments I have to finish up before then plus giving adequate notice. And I can't work any later than I plan to because of my due date. TIA! |

It's fine. If you have vacation time coming to you -- you should use it. You sound really honest. Did you happen to go to Catholic Schools? Your question sounds like something I would have asked before I was burned.
An employer nowadays has no problem laying folks off for any reason...don't give more loyalty than you get. I do have a problem when pregnant women say they're going to return to a job when they know full well they won't. I realize some companies sort of force their hand because the employee would lose their health benefits if they said they weren't returning. |
| Do it! I would use your sick leave, too...unless they will buy out your sick leave. Congrats! |
| I don't understand the conflict. Go on vacation, come back and work one week then give two weeks notice. Standard. |
| I'm on the same boat, except I'm a nanny and I'm not having a baby, I'm moving from this area. I also have vacation planned for right before my quitting day and I can't stay any longer because my contract with my current apartment will be over shortly after I give notice. I wonder I other people's opinion would be different or the same for both of us. |
| Your vacation is a benefit- use it. |
| Don't most employers pay out for any vacation time that you've accrued but not used? If that's the case, definitely use it. And even if the employer does not pay out for accrued but vacation that's not taken, if you've accrued it, you've earned it, and I'd be even more inclined to take it. Also, unless you're the CEO or something, I can't imagine that three weeks isn't enough time to wrap things up. |
This. If they don't want you to be on vacation for your last few weeks, which they may have reasons for, then you just quit a few weeks early and live off the payout from your vacation pay. It would come out to the same thing. |
