What should we wear for our family pictures?

Anonymous
We are getting family pictures done at the Sculpture Garden a couple of Saturdays from now and could use some suggestions for attire that is summery, coordinated but not matchy-matchy. We have two little boys (young 2 year old and 8 month old). We are a pretty casual family...most comfortable barefoot or in flip flops, casual skirts with t-shirts, DH in khakis and short sleeved shirts, etc, etc. Any suggestions for colors, styles, etc? Thanks?

I like when people wear what they would normally wear. I generally recommend staying away from loud, busy patterns and super bright colors. Bright colors are fine, but if one person wears red, and no one else does, that person in the red will stick out. I actually did a session recently and they all wore different shades of blue for their shirts. It came out looking really nice.

Everyone should be shirtless with khaki pants. You should be tandem nursing your children in the pic.

How about a Scottish theme? Everyone wears kilts, sporans etc. Your husband should be wielding a claymore. You can hold a bowl of porridge.

I'd also recommend clothing with simple lines. Like busy patterns or really bright colors you don't want anything that's going to focus the eye away from your faces or that's going to get tangled up in anything outdoors or be constantly fiddled with by little kids. If your photographer has a website, check there for tips as well as browse his/her portfolio to see what looks you like. Also consider if you're likely to to want color or b&w prints and how what you wear will look in each.

I would say nice jeans or khaki pants with white shirts for everyone. Maybe a white button down for adults and polos for kids.

Just don't have everyone matching - like all the kids wearing white shirts. That screams that you are clones without individual personalities. Dressing everyone in white shirts and khakis will make it look like a glee club or waiters.

Just make sure the colors don't clash.
