Which will be the next charter to get popular on DCUM?

Anonymous
Just thinking about this. Stokes is one of the only charters (as far as I know!) that used be unknown among the DCUM set, then have a huge surge in popularity. The two new PS - 8 charters (Mundo Verde and Inspired Teaching) seem to be popular from the get-go. Lottery spaces are getting tighter...people talk about storming their neighborhood schools, but what about a charter? An existing one? Or another new one (Creative Minds??). Thoughts?

Choosing a school based on its popularity amongst random, anonymous internet postings is foolhardy. However, despite the fact that many posts here could have a hidden "agenda", or even be from the same person, I've found this board to be incredible useful and informative.

OK, I 'fess up. I've written every post on this forum, including the one above.

This hasn't been approved. But of course it's bilingual so there will be a line out the door for open houses. If you're pregnant now, you might as well get on the founding board to lock in a preschool spot.

In all honest, I am starting to freak out about middle and high school options. Which of the newer schools will actually make it through 8th grade in a few years? Then what?

18:25. I thought it was approved, at least conditionally (isn't that fairly standard for newly approved charters):

Washington, D.C. — The D.C. Public Charter School Board (PCSB) voted April 25th to approve four applications to create new public charter schools for the 2012-2013 school year. The proposed charter schools are: Creative Minds, Latin American Youth Center Career Academy, DC Scholars and BASIS DC. Three of the applications received conditional approval and must satisfactorily address the required conditions outlined by the Board before they can be granted a charter to open in the fall of 2012.

BASIS is the one people are talking about for middle/high school...

WTF?? Haynes & Latin are already popular. Wilson and Banneker aren't charters.

I wish Basis a lot of luck, because DC could sure use some quality MS options. Having said that, doing a good job as a magnet-type charter in wealthy Southwestern suburbs, doesn't mean you have any fecking clue with the urban underprivileged. And, despite what you may think, you can't just kick or flunk them out because they're pulling down your average.

Think PP means centronia, which is a daycare/ps program associated with dc bilingual.

Oh yes, I bet you're right. Not sure why DC bilingual doesn't get more "air time" on dcum, it looks like a great bilingual program.

DC Bilingual NEVER has open spaces in PS/PK due to heavy load of siblings. Thus (unlike stokes) the school never really has space for the middle class parents who make up DCUM commentariate. It does look like a great school, nice building, nice classrooms, bilingual, teachers see good, Revolultion food, etc, etc, but as long as there is no room for new families it will remain a school that is almost entirely dominated by poor Hispanic families.

How about trilingual? A school based on classical education? Will the Waldorf school get approved? What's the next hot trend in education?

I can't help but feel that each charter school mirrors whatever is hot in educational trends. Given the schools that already exist, nothing else will get approved unless it has some gimmick or hook to draw people in. Seems like there isn't much room for just a decent, solid school. I know! 4 languages! By K!
