Replace ipod touch battery? Anyone done it?

I have an old ipod touch with a dying battery. I want to replace it, but I don't want to pay the $79 Apple charges. My options seem to be buying a battery for about $15-20 and replacing it myself, or else paying an after-market service to replace the battery for about $35-40. Has anyone replaced a battery yourself? Has anyone paid someone (other than Apple) to replace the battery? Know of anyplace local that will do it?
