Jen Hatmaker

Does anyone recall the video of Jen, I think it was sometime back around the start of the pandemic, but I’m not exactly sure, where she went on a rant and essentially put her family on blast for the mess her house was in? It wasn’t anything the rest of us haven’t dealt with— clothes everywhere, a messy laundry room (her laundry is on the porch in the old farmhouse, I believe), kids who haven’t put up their sh*t. However, I thought it was particularly mean. If I remember, it started off with her going into Brandon’s office where he was working on something and he was cordial, but seemed a little uneasy to me. She then proceeded to show her room and then then the laundry room. It wasn’t finished when they did the whole chip and jo-jo wanna be show… she blasted Brandon about the amount of pearl snap shirts had been previously worn and hanging on hangers, all the laundry, and other things that weren’t done- like the fact they have no closet with doors or something like that, and a whole bunch of other stuff. She seemed really upset, and I get it, but she literally just aired their dirty laundry to everyone in her sphere of followers. I distinctly thinking while she was trying to be “real” and relatable, there was a noticeably high level snark and even meanness in her video. She was PO’d and wanted the world to know it. If this thing had been brewing for several years, I really think it showed in this video, when looking back. I tried scrolling back to find it, but had no luck. Anyone else remember?

I think any normal person would buckle under the weight of living a false and dishonest life in the public eye.

It’s a shame it’s leadership and founders largely had other motives. Namely to promote Jen’s brand and image.

Does she or Brandon even go there anymore? Does anyone?

Not really. After the huge "gay marriage is holy" bombshell that Jen dropped in a podcast interview without any warning to ANYone, about 2/3 of the people left the church with broken hearts. Including almost all if not all the elders, because Jen and Brandon and Tray just forgot to inform anyone that ANC was suddenly affirming gay marriage, because they disagreed theologically, and with the way that it was all handled.

There are only 2 families from that day who were still there recently. They may have left by now too.

Keep in mind the Sheltons never really actually went to church so they don't count.

A few of the original people had left prior for various reasons, ranging from Jen getting too political (this is Austin, she was loudly bashing the governor when one of Abbot's top employees was a major donor, was one of the original backbone families very very involved at ANC! So uncool) to not being onboard with their so-called humble pastor being on a reality show, etc. The members were the lifeblood of ANC. The "staff" did virtually nothing so once the main members left, it was all downhill from there.

Another thing that happened is that a very beloved elder was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
He was in the hospital.
Not one pastor came to see him.
Or even called.

There was also an exodus once they brought in Jason Morriss. He is the "pastor" now. He is the smarmiest guy you'll ever meet who pissed off a lot of people just by being himself. Jason just appeared one day from of all places, Lakewood, Joel Osteen's church. I kid you not. And was happy to say how much he loved and respected Joel. No explanation, no introduction, just here's Jason.

I'll let someone else tell what they think about Jason. He's not a Christian tho. He clearly admits to not even really believing in God. And he is the one who they chose to carry on.

I remember that and the subsequent raised eyebrow video where she talked about Brandon deciding to fix their front porch. Both bad.

I don't buy for a second that it was just sexting or porn or anything in that level. I think it had to be something so bad that if it got out, it could've potentially ruined both of their careers. Especially after her mention once that Tray and some other guy sat outside her house for protection while she was having a conversation with Brandon.

It also seems weird that so many people have suddenly chimed in here with "ah, sexting, yeah, that must be it, guys!" That's very obviously not it.

I found it amazing she could write an entire book on saving her marriage and have it become an Oprah endorsed best seller when she’d already left him for a lesbian affair before it came out. There was no push back that all she wrote was essentially bogus. I’m not aware of where there is a safe honest place to discuss her. She has a cult like following that worships her every move, it’s kind of scary.
The parallels with Jen are many.

GOMI used to have a very devoted group of Glennon hater/caller-outers that went back years. But it seems like the forum is deleted.

Wow- lots of good stuff here. I went there and think I know the person with the tumor - initials RM? Don’t want to say anyone’s name. The other Abbott donor, I’m not sure. I do know, or at least surmise, that there were a couple of families of means who went there. Most were like me, firmly in lower middle class. South Austin Trash, if you will. Not too familiar with Jason- we left before his arrival but he does seem smarmy. His trademark hat and priest collar is a total turn off. What a weirdo. Also, a lot of the folks who came over with Generations Church didn’t stay long. After it was clear that John Church didn’t fit thier mold, that deal was done.

If you go back a few pages, other former ANCers have reported similar experiences too.

If ANC had not managed to get the failing Methodist Church building they are in, they would have folded long ago.

Does anyone have the scoop on how that went down? ANC is not United Methodist but somehow they got this building for free? I never understood that.

John Church seemed like a really nice guy. I think he got screwed over by the Hatmakers. Matthew too.

It just doesn’t square with me. Don’t get me wrong- sexting is cheating and is not a good thing at all. But- to immediately and utterly call it quits to me shows a lack of biblical following. Where do the vows come— for better or for worse? I think there’s a limit to how much you can do, and surely there’s more to it. I guess it depends on how egregious it truly was. Maybe he was sharing pictures of his loins and other stuff. Who knows.

I think a lot of people are assuming that it was a one time thing. I have a feeling this was on going. I can imagine a spouse just saying forget it we’re done if this is an ongoing thing and your partner has no intention or hasn’t shown any intention of stopping.

I highly doubt it was a one time thing where he got caught and she said she was out. Because like you said, that just doesn’t seem likely. I assume it was an ongoing thing and everybody has their breaking point.

Most churches require their pastors to have a post-graduate divinity degree at a seminary where they study the bible in-depth, usually in the original Greek, and also take classes on history, preaching, counseling, etc.

Neither Tray or Brandon have any theological training. nothing. No more qualified to be a pastor than anyone off the street.

And it showed.

Go visit some time if you get a chance. ANC is now a sort of pointlessly pseudo philosophical post-Christian 'church' / artists colony led by a small group of tryhards. Imagine a church led by a bunch of college philosophy majors who like to do religious cosplay.

Everything about it reeks of phoniness and pretension.

The head pastor is so trying to make that dumb hat happen. You won't see any Hatmaker there anymore either. Is he trying to say he likes hat makers or something so his boss will come back?

Music is good though. I'll give them that.
