Do we need ID for the baby?

Anonymous
We're traveling for the first time with our baby and wondering if we need to bring her birth certificate? I'll be traveling alone on the way there and my husband will be with me on the way back. Thanks!

P.S. We're traveling domestic.

By traveling do you mean flying?

Yes, sorry! Flying.

We flew with copies of the birth certificate, both of us, because it has the baby's name and the parents' name. Go to the website of your airline or call and ask if they have specific requirements.

Yes, if you are flying you should bring it. The airline may ask to see it, esp if you have a lap baby. We flew with our son a number of times and didn't bring it (we didn't know to bring it), and no one ever asked. However, we recently flew with him at 18 mos and the airline asked to see his birth certificate to verify that he was indeed under 2 years and eligible to be a lap baby. Luckily, they called a manager and let us fly without it, but she said they could have charged us for a seat (although we could get re-reimbursed if we provided documentation once we were home again). They said anything "official" with his name and birth date would due, even a copy of an insurance card.

Ok, thanks. We're flying Virgin America and our baby is 6 months. Not sure if we have an insurance card with her name but thats good to know it will work as official ID.

Southwest is the only airline that has ever asked for proof of baby's age -- and we've flown extensively, with two different babies. Immunization records also work, if you don't want to bring birth certificate.
