natural nail polish for tween girl?

Anonymous
My tween daughter is a bit obsessed with nail polish of late. I occasionally paint her toes but never her fingernails because she bites them and I'm terrified of the chemicals in the nail polish. To be frank, I don't even like painting her toenails with the stuff.

Any recommendations on nail polish (or make-up, for that matter, since I can see that one coming) that is less toxic than the stuff we grown-ups use? I keep looking for stuff in stores and I find some that have no formaldehyde, but have toluene. Or no toluene, but they have TiO2, and so on...

I use Piggy Paint brand. We buy it at a froofy boutique on Harrison in Arlington, but they're online too. Only downside is it doesn't last as long as "real" polish--it tends to chip. That said, the label advises drying with a warm hairdryer to set it, and we've never bothered with that.

OP, its great that you want to use natural products and I think that's wonderful. You can try whole foods and organic websites. My only concern is that you sound panicked about her coming in contact with regular nail polish, etc. Just standing by a bus probably exposes her to more chemicals than she would get through nail polish, but that's just a side note.

Zoya is great, and they have every color under the sun. (All big 3 free, I think.)

Plus, they give girls' names to their polishes, so there might be one that shares a name with your DD.

Butter London is a little pricey but is also good.
