| California Baby and Badger, both from Whole Foods. Badger was ranked very high by an independent lab for blocking sun as well as being low in chemicals, but Cal. Baby makes a stick that is great for the face. Blue Lizard is often recommended for good sun protection, but I recently looked at the label and it has a number of paraben products in it. |
| i can't find one that doesn't sting their eyes. any ideas? |

Check out the Skin Deep database from EWG.
Find the sunscreen that’s best for you. You’ll be surprised by their best and worst recommendations. Consider one of their top 5 picks all of which are SPF 30: 1. California Baby Sunblock Stick No Fragrance 2. Badger Sunscreen 3. California Baby Sunblock Stick Everyday/Year-Round 4. Keys Soap Solar RX Therapeutic Sunblock 5. Trukid Sunny Days Facestick Mineral Sunscreen Zinc or titanium oxide based sunscreens are the best and safest. Use enough sunscreen and reapply every 2 hours. |

I'm the pp.
My dermatologist told me that all the chemically-based sunscreens (Waterbabies, California baby etc) are basically ineffective, and many of the manufacturers are actually involved in a lawsuit in California about false advertising of protection from the sun. The only sunscreen for babies on his list of "approved" products was the Blue Lizard baby because it is a physical block rather than a chemical one. |
I know California Baby is actually a physical block (titanium dioxide) not chemical. Badger is also physical (zinc oxide) |
| I like California Baby and Aveeno Baby. |
California Baby is not a chemical sunscreen, it's a physical barrier. |
| There is a huge selection of children sunscreen (inlcuding california baby) at wegman's - in their organic section.. |
| EW use the California Baby stick and Aveeno (Aveeno wasn't too bad in the EWG database, and it's available everywhere. |

Here's the Skin Cancer Foundation's approved list. Organic ingredients aren't a criteria here, but you might want to cross-reference your products with this list anyhow.
http://www.skincancer.org/images/stories/documents/sealcombined.pdf My dermatologist believes in the chemical blocks - loves the new Neutrogena ones in particular. I think the real question about them is how long they are effective on your skin. Also, not to start a debate here, but Consumer Reports did a piece last year about physical blocks and a possible cancer link. Something about the size of the molecules in the titanium oxide or something like that - I can't remember.... |
