Michelle Obama - Baby Mama?

In the Michelle Obama Yay or Nay thread, some posters suggested that some criticism of Michelle Obama was rooted in racist and/or sexist sentiments. Just in case there was any doubt as to whether this is the case, Fox News has just eliminated it by labeling Michelle with a racially-charged, sexist, offensive term (not to mention inaccurate):

Notice the text at the bottom calling Michelle "Obama's Baby Mama"?

What's next, "Obama's Aunt Jemima"? "Obama's Nappy Headed Ho"?

Hey - he's riding the race ticket, and that's a part of it. By the way, not always an offensive term in the black community, although when used by Fox - it's kind of mean.

I have heard it said, and have to agree, that if Barack Obama had his mother's features predominantly, and was still going by "Barry" - as he had since elementary school, then Hillary Clinton would be the DNC nominee.

He is trading on his race - and so this is a part of it, and if he thinks for one moment that his wife will be treated any differently than young Hillary Clinton was, just because she's a "black" female attorney, instead of a "white" female attorney, he's naive and should not be running for President.

Well, okay then. I guess we can look forward to Cindy McCain being described as "McCain's Harlot" given they engaged in an extramarital affair while John was married to his first wife. Or, maybe "McCain's Druggy Pill Popper" given her drug addiction? Would you say that is all well and good? After all, Cindy's money has financed his political career so that opens the door right?

BTW, I've heard it said that McCain provided secret information about US troop movements to his Vietnamese captors and received special favors because his father cut deals with the Vietnamese government. Don't believe everything you hear, okay?

Wow. Just wow. Unbelievable.

This is what I have come to expect from the republican machince (including fox news). Fox is all about "tabliod" news. Also, Ms. Obama is Obama wife, that fact alone takes her out the the "Baby Mama" camp.

All Obama supporters should be happy that this is all they can throw at the candidate

Fox News just seems like the National Enquirer for stupid people who want to believe they're getting real news. It surprises me to no end, how many people watch this utter crap and believe the "news" Bill O'Reilly & his ilk spew. It's not just undereducated white folks watching it. It's college educated and those with masters degrees.

Well, you just said it, so I guess we don't need to "look forward" to it anymore.

I was there for Bill and Hillary's Big Adventure, and believe me, the campaign is just starting. You all better grow a thicker skin.

I figure some old, fat, white guy was trying to be all hip on lingo, and figured mama rhymed with Obama, so they might as well use it. While I think it was a stupid and inaccurate use of the term, I don't think it was used to be hurtful or racist. After seeing the clip, I in some way feel as if it is to make fun of the documentary that is discussed in the clip.

As far as the special treatment goes. From my understanding, when the North Vietnamese discovered John McCain's father was an Admiral, they sought treatment for the injuries he suffered in the crash. Presumably they treated him better in the beginning, hoping to get somewhere him as a pawn and getting information from his father? Who knows for sure. When his father was made commander of all U.S. forces in the Vietnam theater, McCain was offered early release, which he denied. The prisoners were being released on a first in, first out, basis, and he didn't want to take away the release of another prisoner.

What is known is that he was beaten and tortured, and held against his will for five and a half years. He was captured in October 1967 and released in March 1973, if he did share secrets, he certainly didn't have five years worth. There is no doubt that the beatings he received, or that he had been bound and tied. He left the military because of his poor physicals, due to the torture he received, and to this day can't lift his arms above his head.

As for his wife, yes, they had an affair, and married shortly after his divorce from his first wife was finalized. They have been married for 28 years now, so I don't know if the media calling her a Harlot would be appropriate.

This is terrible. While I don't agree with Fox New's take on almost all issues, I would always strongly support the presence of a conservative new media outlet. Discussion and differences on issues is a good thing IMO. I can't believe that this is acceptable now in main stream media.

This will be a landmark campaign. Obama does not need to win to prove that the US can move beyond racial bias. He could lose for reasons of poor campaign tactics, shift in public opinion toward the war or the economy, or McCain all of sudden getting it together. I would prefer he not lose but his run could still be a uniting and positive impact on race relations and mutual respect. However, if the polls and studies afterward show that Obama lost because most Americans would not vote for an African American then racial divisiveness will hit a new high. Fox is not only hitting below the belt but really doing a disservice to the entire country with this one.

Conservative views are one thing, but Fox News & Bill O'Reilly et al, take conservatism to a whole new level, that I find myself shaking my head whever I think of Bill and his crew.

Before "W" took office, I did not feel so strongly against people who affiliated with the Republican party. To me it was another political party. After "W", I question people's intelligence who (continue to) side with his party despite the high level corruption, incompetence, dishonesty, denial ...

You have the rich folks and now the poor folks in the Republican party. 25 years ago, poor people were Democrats. What does the Republican party offer for the poor folks? Absolutely nothing! Poor people get a lot of God and country and "you're not patriotic if you don't vote for the Republicans" crap.

With the economy in the dumps, the Republicans want to take away extended unemployment checks bc they feel that people will not look for jobs. The democrats want to extend it for another 13 weeks bc people are not finding jobs. I imagine the extended unemployment checks are more vital to the poor Republicans who continue to vote Republican. I don't get it. You want your unemployment benefits reduced by continuing to vote Republican? I have yet to see someone on welfare voting Republican. I imagine it can be found in Orange County, California. I speak from experience in that I have seen a lot of working class white people on welfare. I have seen white teenage parents who keep their children who then repeat the cycle of becoming teen parents themselves. They are also conservative. I don't think they understand what they're voting for.

Well, Cindy at least was a harlot. Michelle has never been an unwed mother. Interesting standards you have.

And, just to be clear, I have nothing against unwed mothers. I do, however, object to using prejudicial language in reference to them. To say nothing of using the same language with regard to wed mothers.

I'm stunned at the ignorance on this board. Thank goodness for JSteele. "Baby mama" is a term for an unwed mother. It is being used derogatively here (and incorrectly) to cut Michelle Obama down to size. And Barack Obama has not expoloited racial issues in his campaign; to the contrary, he has emphasized inclusiveness at every turn. Yes, he happens to be black (sorry, I think the term "biracial" is silly), but so what? I can't even begin to refute some of the ridiculous statements I read here. Although I sure appreciate JSteele's efforts.

Totally agree. And to the 8:35 poster who suggests that because he is "riding the race ticket" that pejorative slang is to be expected and tolerated? Wow. How incredibly ignorant of you. Even if he was "riding the race ticket" -- and I certainly don't think he is -- that somehow makes it okay to use derogatory, racially-charged language about him and his wife? I don't think so.

Fox News makes me sick. All of you even beginning to defend Fox make me sick. How can you possibly defend that?? Michelle Obama is his WIFE.

Does everyone know about HOW McCain left his wife??? She suffered a debilitating and disfiguring car crash while he was in Vietnam and he promptly started cheating on her, finally leaving her for Cindy. The first wife was a model before the accident left her gaining weight and deformed. Sounds like a great guy. read below

"Now that Hillary Clinton has at last formally withdrawn from the race for the White House, the eyes of America and the world will focus on Barack Obama and his Republican rival Senator John McCain.

While Obama will surely press his credentials as the embodiment of the American dream – a handsome, charismatic young black man who was raised on food stamps by a single mother and who represents his country’s future – McCain will present himself as a selfless, principled war hero whose campaign represents not so much a battle for the presidency of the United States, but a crusade to rescue the nation’s tarnished reputation.

Forgotten woman: But despite all her problems Carol McCain says she still adores he ex-husband

McCain likes to illustrate his moral fibre by referring to his five years as a prisoner-of-war in Vietnam. And to demonstrate his commitment to family values, the 71-year-old former US Navy pilot pays warm tribute to his beautiful blonde wife, Cindy, with whom he has four children.

But there is another Mrs McCain who casts a ghostly shadow over the Senator’s presidential campaign. She is seldom seen and rarely written about, despite being mother to McCain’s three eldest children.

And yet, had events turned out differently, it would be she, rather than Cindy, who would be vying to be First Lady. She is McCain’s first wife, Carol, who was a famous beauty and a successful swimwear model when they married in 1965.

She was the woman McCain dreamed of during his long incarceration and torture in Vietnam’s infamous ‘Hanoi Hilton’ prison and the woman who faithfully stayed at home looking after the children and waiting anxiously for news.

But when McCain returned to America in 1973 to a fanfare of publicity and a handshake from Richard Nixon, he discovered his wife had been disfigured in a terrible car crash three years earlier. Her car had skidded on icy roads into a telegraph pole on Christmas Eve, 1969. Her pelvis and one arm were shattered by the impact and she suffered massive internal injuries.

When Carol was discharged from hospital after six months of life-saving surgery, the prognosis was bleak. In order to save her legs, surgeons

had been forced to cut away huge sections of shattered bone, taking with it her tall, willowy figure. She was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to use a catheter.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering.

For nearly 30 years, Carol has maintained a dignified silence about the accident, McCain and their divorce. But last week at the bungalow where she now lives at Virginia Beach, a faded seaside resort 200 miles south of Washington, she told The Mail on Sunday how McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later."
