Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| That they watch movies fairly regularly (or even at all) in SACC? Really? Do the kids need extra TV time? Does your SACC do this too? Or is it just mine? |
| They do watch movies at our SACC too, I wouldn't say it as regular, may once in month or so.. which is absolutely fine with us. |
| I find it weird that the kids watch videos during the regular school day. And not eductional videos. We're talking Lion King and the Cat in the Hat here. |
| OP here - in our SACC it seems more like once or twice a week that I walk in and see them watching movies. I just think it's odd that they watch anything and am surprised that more parents don't make a fuss about it. Just wondering what other parents thought. |

SACC varies a lot school to school. At our former school they NEVER watched movies. At the second school, they did fairly often. And yes, it bothers me. We actually switched to a different after car in part over this issue.
Non educational videos in the classroom (other than maybe once or twice a year) bothers me too. |
| There's a big difference between movies in SACC and movies in school. For SACC, the kids have been in school all day. Its wind down time. Art every day gets pretty boring. Sometimes its too hot or too rainy to go outside. So watching a movie is fine with us. |
| Guess it depends on the parents. If my kids were in SACC (they aren't...I'm a SAHM), I would be fine with a movie a couple of times a week, especially if the weather is yucky. They have been in school all day. How would you like to come home from work and be forced to participate in art, music, or planned activities after a long day? They desperately need time to chill. Of course, if the weather is nice, they should be outside at least some of the time. |
I'm 10:21. At our old school they did not have to participate in planned activities. They could sit and quietly read, play cards or games, work on homework, participate in low key craft projects (cool ones like actually learning to sew using a sewing machine, hand embroidery, knitting, etc.) They used the gym on rainy/too hot days or could go on the playground and play or just sit under a tree and talk to friends if they wanted to do that instead. My kid IS the kind that needs a lot of downtime so she usually read, did the crafts or sat under a tree on the playground. She loved SACC. The new school SACC is not well organized. The movies are from laziness and not knowing how to effectively use their facilities and organize the kids. It was a chaotic free for all. |

OP - thanks for posting this. At my kids' SACC, it seems there is, on average, one movie/week. They also give kids the opportunity for another quiet activity in the other room - reading, card games, some crafts.
I wish they would post the name of the movie on the board in the a.m. so I can let the kids know if they can watch it or not (some movies are PG or for whatever reason, in appropriate for my kids, one of whom is 6). I think I'll ask them to do this. |
| I never remember, ever having my kids watch a movie at SACC. I guess it depends on the school. And, yes, I would be very annoyed if they were doing this. |
| I've had my kids in SACC at two different schools. I can count on one hand the number of times they have watched movies and I'm pretty sure those times were teacher workdays. My kids are busy, usually out on the playground or playing games in the gym. |
