Nemacolin vs Greenbrier vs Homestead

Anonymous
We just got back from a weekend at Nemacolin and liked it a lot. Wondering, though, how it compares to Greenbrier and Homestead, in terms of luxuriousness, activities for families with young kids, etc? We don't golf, btw, and thought we'd probably have loved Nemacolin more if we were golfers. tia!

Greenbrier...no question--it's beautiful and has all the history. You have to stay in one of the cottages..has a little front room with fireplace..lots of activities for kids..including kids camp, horse riding etc etc--all the things that Nemacolin has but better. 44 West is a great steak house and Sam Snead's has a great view of the 18th green. I like Nemacolin but only if I am staying at Falling Rock..the only properties at Nemacolin as so so. Homestead is a step under both Nemacolin and Greenbrier but still nice esp. with the history around it.

Agree. Greenbrier is tops, Homestead is faded.

If you want to do things off the grounds, like explore the area around the resort, the area around Warm and Hot Springs is much prettier than dumpy Greenbrier, WV. If you are going to just stay on the property, maybe Greenbrier is nicer, but I wouldn't call Homestead faded.

Honestly, my ranking is:

Nemacolin
Homestead
Greenbrier

This is because Nemacolin is "earthier", especially the spa.
Homestead has more activities that are less stuffy, and my young kids love it
Greenbrier is very nice but in a very European and cold sort of way. It does not have as many activities as the Homestead, or at least not as many that my family enjoys.

At these places I tend to live in the spa, and I prefer Nemacolin's to the other two. It really depends on your family and what they want to do. Greenbrier is also a place where you feel you must dress for every meal, which is fine, but for a family vacation I prefer something less formal.

Sorry but Greenbrier you only have to "dress" in the formal dining room..which we avoid since we are casual people. It is classy though..no mumus running around. I would agree that the Spa at Nemacolin is amazing..very southwest but again, other than Falling Rock..very marginal place to stay.

Sounds like you didn't make it off of the resort yourself and are very misinformed. There are lovely places around the Greenbrier. Lewisburg, about 5 minutes away, is a great little town. Great shopping, Carnegie Hall (one of 4 in the country), artisans, great restaurants, beautiful parks, etc.

Which one of these is best for toddlers? We are considering going on a nearby vacation with our 1.5 year old.

Are you going to want any time without your DC? All three places can get you a sitter, but Nemacolin has an organized camp/daycare for even the littlest kids.

Also, Nemacolin has townhouses (so you can get a kitchen and eat some meals not in a restaurant). Nemacolin also has some very casual/inexpensive places to eat -- more so than the casual places at the Greenbrier or the Homestead.

Nemacolin also has some spectacularly tacky "art" -- not fun for adults, but maybe toddlers would be into it.

Just FYI I think Nemacolin is slated to get one of PA's new casino licenses, which may change the vibe a bit (for me it would be a plus but maybe not for all).
