Paid my first visit to Motherhood Maternity over the weekend and was pretty disappointed. Most everything seemed targeted to a really young demographic and unfortunately, their clothes really just aren't my style.
My current wardrobe is mostly JCrew/BR/Anthro, so I guess I was hoping to find something equivalent in the maternity category. Any suggestions? Am I holding out for something that doesn't exist? |
I'm under 30 (28), and hate to tell you, but Motherhood doesn't appeal to me either. I generally wear Ann Taylor/Gap/Banana/J Crew type clothes.
I think that there are clothes to be found if you search the racks at Motherhood. I've found a small amount of decent basics there (pants mainly -- work pants, khaki bermuda shorts, cropped pants, a few plain dresses) that will work just fine. But I much rather prefer the maternity clothes at Gap -- lots of really good basics (tees, tanks, some nice dresses for work). Pea in the Pod is a bit pricey in my opinion. I also found some decent clothes at Kohls, which sells a line by Motherhood (called Oh Baby by Motherhood) that is in my opinion a bit nicer than the clothes sold in Motherhood. Good luck -- the pickings sure are slim, regardless of what age you are, and my maternity wardrobe is miniscule! |
PP -- I don't know why it made a smiley face in my post. Should say 28. |
i bought most of my clothes at Gap. i also bought some stuff at Pea in a Pod. their clothes are expensive, but i wanted some nice clothes. i loved my wool pants -- i thought they made me look "skinny." haha. i also bought some at nordstrom and zappos. cute tees at Target. |
Keeping picking through Motherhood. I was able to find some basic work pants - black, gray, and khaki, that were nice and pretty plain and flattering, and a few decent tops to get me through. I agree some of the clothes are hideous though. I heard Old Navy is nice but I wasn't able to find anything there - I only tried once though. |
I'm like you, more BR and Anthropologie. I was able to find some things at Motherhood, but quite frankly I've had to make some style concessions while pregnant. I'm on my 2nd while wearing the same set of clothes from the first. They are okay, but definitely not anything like what I would wear normally. I haven't wanted to shell out for Pea in the Pod, so I haven't looked there much. C'est la vie. |
Boden has maternity now, you might check that out. I also liked Gap better than most things I found. |
I was selective with what I bought at Motherhood Maternity and focused on basics like t-shirts, jeans, and a couple of pairs of work pants. I agree, a lot of the stuff isn't that appealing. Also, would recommend Gap for work pants and shirts. Ann Taylor Loft has some cute stuff too.
Depending on how you're carrying, you can also consider sticking with your favorite brands and just getting larger sizes. I've done this with a lot of my maternity purchases - just bought a larger size and it's been fine so far at 34 weeks. |
Old Navy/Gap has a much better selection online than in stores. The maternity sizing is pretty true to the regular sizing so if you know how their regular stuff fits, you're likely to have good luck with the way the maternity stuff fits. |
I have not had this experience with ON sizing -- I am usually a size small and most (but not all) of the ON maternity clothes in small are huge on me. Gap seems much more true to size for me than ON. A friend gave me a few ON dresses in size small that will only fit me in the very end when nothing else will fit. Also, I've found that ON has few of the t-shirts with ruching on the sides, which is soooo much more flattering than regular maternity t-shirts sold at other stores. Also, pre-maternity, I generally live on the weekends in ON ribbed tanks that come in a rainbow of colors. I have since discovered the similar maternity tanks sold by Gap are a million times more comfortable and stretchy, so they retain their shape a lot better than the ON tanks that really stretch out after a few hours of wear. |
I agree with those who said keep picking through Motherhood -- there can be some good finds there. In addition to Gap, try Ann Taylor Loft maternity. There can be decent finds there too. |
Loft has maternity online. So does Nordstrom. |
Target. |
Loft has nice things. I've also had very good luck at the Destination Maternity at Montgomery Mall. Also found some Heidi Klum tops at Babies r Us that I really liked. |
I'm 31, and my first thought when I went into Motherhood are "these are old lady clothes!" I am also mostly BR, Anthro, Ann Taylor, etc. I just think maternity clothing is ugly. I ended up investing about 4 maternity dresses, 3 from Pea in a Pod and one from Motherhood,; two pairs of Motherhood pants; a few tee-shirts; and two cardigan-type things that I wear over the shirts. My wardrobe is limited and I am just suffering through a couple of more months.
