chile peppers in recipe -- too much for a toddler?

Anonymous
Hi, I'm looking at an Indian recipe that calls for chile peppers (Thai or serrano preferably). Our toddler doesn't do great with spicy food, so I'm thinking of either eliminating the chile peppers or reducing the amount. How would you get enough flavor for the grownups without too much heat for the toddler? For example, would it help to cut the peppers in half, remove the seeds, and cook the dish with them but remove them once it is finished?

Whenever I make spicy food I usually make a mini version without the pepper for my DC. Usually it's some kind of Thai curry so it's pretty easy to have a small pot next to the main pot on the stove where I just cook both at the same time but eliminate the chili paste from the small pot.

Thai and Serrano chilies are pretty hot. I'd give the kid something else for dinner, or give them the meat/veggies whatever without the sauce.

DD handles spicy ok, but she rubs her eyes/face when she eats, which I can't really control at 15 mos. So I always make a non spicy portion for her.

I am Indian and experienced in cooking. I would eliminate the chili peppers completely if a toddler cannot handle. It will not reduce the flavor. For taste, I would add a little bit (depending on how much heat you can handle) crushed chilli to the adult portions. I use hand to break a green chilli, crush it gently with fingers to the gravy and remove the chilli, before eating (Make sure to wash your fingers well with soap). This process has the flexibility for both adults and kids.

OP, go ahead and make one dish appropriately spiced to the grown-ups and then stir some milk or sour cream into the kids' portions....
