| If you cannot commit to caring for that animal through its life. This means figuring out whether you might have kids, and what your plan B might be in that instance. There are a few circumstances that would warrant rehoming a pet but it should be a last resort. Think of it like getting rid of a family member, because that's what you're doing. It makes me so sick to see so many people trying to rehome pets on listservs, on this forum, on craigslist. These animals were good enough for you for years, but you just ditch them when your life circumstances change. UGH. Guess what: you're an asshole and you SHOULD NOT HAVE ADOPTED THOSE PETS IN THE FIRST PLACE. People probably told you that at the time. |

You should sell crystal balls, so everyone can see their future commitments, salaries, health conditions, and all other variables at the moment they decide to get a pet.
|
| Never had a pet, never will. Don't want the commitment. |
| Cursing the poster out in the original thread wasn't enough for you? |
| NP here- I totally agree. |
Actually, you're supposed to figure out a plan a and plan b so that you can determine whether or not you will be able to keep the pet for its lifetime. But you're too selfish to figure that out, right? |
OP, could you also apply this to having children? If so could you re-write it to reflect becoming a parent and post it in General Parenting? I think you should actually take this to a legislative level with DC, MD, & VA. I mean, who need rights.... |
| Ha, I actually agree and loved you F-bomb tirade (I assume it was you on the other thread). Im being serious, its a crappy situation but your post made me laugh. |
| DO NOT USE A COMPUTER IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF CAPS LOCK. |
Except I don't see people on craigslist trying to rehome an adopted child because they are having a new baby or because they lost their job... fwiw I was adopted as a child and I am rehoming my cat. I love her, but developed a severe allergy that I did NOT have at the time I got her. |
Good for you, and I really mean that! I think it's huge to know your limits and what you can and cannot handle! |
| I agree with you, OP. |
Thanks. I also stopped at two kids. I do know my limits! |

Animal adopter/owner/lover/ & daughter of humane society board member here. This is nonsense. So this is the scenario you are expecting: "OK, well, I might get married someday, and I might have a kid someday, and even though I'm not allergic, my kid COULD have allergies severe enough to cause them all sorts of significant long term health problems, so I should decide right now, in that scenario, will I be willing to sacrifice my child's health?. If not, I should not adopt animal."
If every unmarried/no kids adult went into pet adoption answering this question, there would be no pet adoption. Well, not none, but so much less. And your expectation that people can actually put themselves in this place in their future and understand all of their emotions and thoughts is just a 'little' unrealistic. Seriously. And again, its not like that OP from the other post uttered the word euthanasia. She is trying to find a GOOD home for them. Get off your high horse. |

I'm with you 100% OP! I'm so sick of reading posts on Craigslist, and I receive emails from US shelters for "urgents" (iminent death) - people make me sick. I'm tired of the abuse, the neglect - animals feel pain, lonliness, sadness, just as we do. When will people get it? People are giving away pets on Craiglist - well, here's a great story of someone who gave away their dog on Craigslist and felt they found someone with "good character".
