Regional Weekend Getaways with toddlers

Anybody have any suggestions of a one or two night getaway in driving distance from DC? Something out of the city (so not Philly, Baltimore, or any other city), but something that is enjoyable with a toddler? Outdoorsy is good. Hotel style accommodation is also good. Thanks!

My wife and I enjoyed a drive down to Charlottesville, VA. There are some nice hotels nearby, and the city is very walkable and interesting. Another option would be Annapolis, MD.

Head up to Lancaster county in PA. Tons of outdoorsy activities - Cherry Moon farms is like a pumpkin patch/petting zoo on steriods. Tons of Amish activites, pretezel factory tours, working Amish farms, and of course Dutch Wonderland.

We took our kids there sevearl times when they were toddlers and they had a blast.

Also - check out a cabin rental on Lake Anna. Fishing, swimming, smores on the fireplace, boat rides, etc. Lots of good old fashioned out door fun!

Ditto Lancaster (and particularly Strasburg). There is a railway museum, a toy train museum, and actual steam train that you can take, a little general store in the middle of town and some very interesting Amish communites that are fun to go a look at. Not to mention Dutch Wonderland .

What about Williamsburg? Lots to do there, from just walking around to water park (Wolf Creek Lodge) to Busch Gardens.

How old were your children when they really enjoyed a place like Dutch Wonderland? TIA

Lynchburg, VA and environs. Lynchburg has lots of hotel chains and lots for kids to do. There's a children's museum downtown and it's not far from the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is a beautiful drive in the spring when the rhododendrons are blooming.

I waited for my older one to be 3. Before that, we would occasionally do a small fair and that was enough for him.

We took my first son there when he was 14 months old and he actually had a blast. You can do most of the rides with a hand held infant - enough to fill a morning, anyway. The second time we went back, my older had just turned 3 and my youngest was 13 months. The older one had a BLAST and the younger one enjoyed himself also.

Shenandoah National Park. Camp or stay in a lodge or cabin. We've been twice with our toddler and had am AWESOME time. Have fun wherever you go!

I think DD was four, but only because she's on the smaller side and we wanted her to be able to go on more rides. She had a great time and wasn't disappointed that it was too large a park that she had to skip a lot of the rides because we were only there for one (long!) day. Be sure to check out the water park side, too!

Cacapon Resort State Park in WV (not too far from Berkeley Springs) or Deep Creek Lake State Park in MD if you want something rural.
