I'm a lawyer, and I'm curious if there are working mom lawyers who actually like their jobs. Do you work for a firm, gov't, etc?
I love my job- I work for the govt.
Policy-based advocacy related to homelessness -- love it.
Also work for the gov't. Love my job. Hours are reasonable and work is interesting.
I work for a private firm and I like my job most of the time.

Fed government attorney, telecommute 50%, great flexibility, reasonable hours, low stress. Would NEVER give this up.
But there certainly are some very stressful fed govt attorney positions out there... |
Fed atty. I don't love my job -- subject matter is not the greatest, BUT i LOVE the location, hours, lack of stress, pay, benefits, and my immediate bosses.
Hey government attorneys... did you leave private firms? If so, how are you managing with the pay cut? Worth it for the more flexible hours, etc.? Thanks for your thoughts!
I don't love my job, but I do love the flexibility (I work part time) and, to be honest, the money's great. So it's a trade of. I work for a firm.
I love my job -- I work in house for a large company. I telecommute 1 day a week and have a lot of flexibility if my son is sick or has appts. It's definitely a pay cut but worth it for the flexibility.
Gov't attorney here who left a private firm. I now make 60% of what I made in private practice, but my hours are sane. It was so worth it that I would do it again in a second. Interesting, we actually now save more money because we are more conscious about where it goes. But, the way we made it work was that we always lived below our means so it wasn't hard to downsize my income.
I'm a corporate (transactional) attorney and I love my job probably 90% of the time. I work for a big law firm. I credit how much I enjoy my job on the type of work (challenging, exciting) and the other attorneys in my group.
Law school administration - great atmosphere and low stress
9:27 here. I never worked, except during law school, for a private firm. I never wanted that lifestyle and so never got used to higher salaries. I graduated from law school, though, a long time ago, and was single for a long time, so I was able to save money and buy a house before marriage and kids. That's helped a tremendous amount because the equity from that house helped us buy a bigger house later. Times are different now for more recent grads, with house prices so high. Also. law school used to be a lot cheaper. It would be much harder to go right into government from law school and stay there now, I think. |
Used to work at a firm & now work at a non-profit. Took a $120k pay cut & it's been worth every penny. Though 4 years at a firm (pre-kids) did pay for a fabulous wedding, a down payment for our house, & 80% of my student loans, so I'm glad I did it.
