Private School Preschool Programs

Anonymous
Do the kids that are in the preschool programs (not Pre-K, but those that admit 2 and 3 year-olds) at a private school go through the same admissions process for Pre-K and/or K (it seems like Pre-K is the same application process as K, and that therefore once admitted, you're in the school for good) as those kids who are not affiliated with the school? Do they still apply, and if they do, do they get any sort of bump?

For instance, the schools I'm thinking of are River, National Presbyterian, St. Patricks, GDS, etc. Thanks.

At St. Patrick's there is one year, Nursery, before PreK. If a child is admitted for N, that child will move forward through the following grades in the same manner as a child admitted at any other grade. N is a very hard year to get an offer of admission though unless you are a priority applicant.

Once you are in, you are in. At least I can refer to 3 ofbyour schools.

GDS doesn't have a preschool.

GDS starts at Pre-K (age 4) and once you are in you can go all the way to 12th grade if you choose to do so.

* Caveat: you can stay as long as you like, unless you are counseled out when the real rigor kicks in (4th-ish, or 6th-ish), and it is felt that the "fit" is no longer a good one.

It's hard to predict these things with any accuracy at age 3.

River starts as young as 18 months and goes through 3rd grade. If your DC is admitted at 18 months to 3 years he or she will be able to continue at River until 3rd grade unless a learning disability is found for which the school is not equiped to handle. In that case, the administration will make a recommendation that you find at a different school and in most cases provides assistance in that regard.

My child was not a priority applicant and was admitted. It's not impossible. The program is fantastic and my child is thriving.

I'll say it for her: maybe her child is precocious, kind and generally adorable. to say "you are lucky" is a bit snarky, no.

This is where some of you posters don't seem to get it--I have seen this on other threads too. Even if this child WERE precocious, kind and adorable, the child would indeed be lucky to get into one of these competitive schools/ grade levels bc there are many OTHER kids who are also precocious, kind and adorable who don't get in.
