Just wondering what interests other highly gifted young students (grades 1-4) have...My ds, 2nd grade, does not always have typical interests. |
boy, 7
civil engineering mechanical engineering U.S. history from the Colonial period to WW2 decorating and design. He was, candidly, a little too into this year's Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano for my comfort. sigh. |
Insects, insects, insects. And dinosaurs. He is 6. |
That's OK. It balances out the engineering ![]() |
Funny, my ds, age 8 is 'into' regular kids stuff (SpongeBob, action figures, sports) but also some kind of 'quirky' stuff too...like following national news stories (is an Obama fan) and lately into biology. |
My 7yo DS is into Charlie Sheen and WWE. |
My 5 yr old DD is into writing and illustrating her own books. This morning she made a cookbook. She is also fascinated with "cycles" (solar system, seasons, water, solid state changes, etc) And bugs. And she loves Polly Pocket. ![]() |
History and historical fiction. Sports, especially soccer. Math. |
my 9 year old DS is into legos, drawing and cartooning, taking apart appliances, creating "robots" out of old appliances, more drawing, listening to books on tape, history, architecture, and drawing. |
Sports sports and more sports.
Current events and politics. |
high tea |
9 yr old: Legos, origami, math riddles, puzzles, pokemon
7 yr old: mythology, animals and nature pretty typical stuff |
This post makes me happy. I have a GT child who is headed to HG center who has perfectly typical 8 year old interests. I hear about gifted kids who can't relate because of their usual or very focused interests. I wondered about social issues. Now I feel better! Thanks! |
PP: Don't worry about it. There are some quirky interests represented -- DC's class has a kid in it who is obsessed by the weather. The difference is -- he doesn't get teased. Instead, the kids good naturedly and respectfully call him the "weather man" and the teacher invites him to share his expertise with the class. His interest is acknowledged and incorporated and he's accepted.
But there are plenty of kids like mine, who would like to talk about basketball more than anything else. ![]() |
my 6 yo is into making charts, graphs, organizing information. computer stuff (he's trying to figure out excel). |
