Food, Cooking, and Restaurants

My child's daycare (Bright Horizons) has a *very* strict policy on outside food for birthday parties, etc.- must be store bought (not homemade), must be produced in a nut-free facility (and labeled to indicate that).
Anyway, I went a little crazy trying to find a bakery that could meet our needs, and thought I'd share my findings in case anyone needs this information in the future. There are two bakeries in VA that make and deliver cupcakes to DC, though you need to order well in advance: http://www.thelemonadebakery.com/ http://freeforallcupcakes.com/kitchen.html But best (and cheapest!) of all, the Giant in Silver Spring has a nut-free bakery! Not a good solution if you're dealing with other allergens (wheat, milk, etc.), but I was so thrilled to find something local that complies with the nut policy, and wanted to pass it on! |
| Thanks! I knew about Lemonade but not the one in Fairfax, which is near me. |
| Which Giant in Silver Spring? I noticed that the Giants in Wheaton and downtown SS do sell baked goods that were made in a nut-free facility, but I didn't think the actual bakeries in the stores were nut-free. My son has peanut and tree nut allergies, so we always get his cupcakes there. |
| Whole Foods sell those "Safe for School" individually packaged cookies that are nut free. You can pick them up whenever and not deal with the hassle of having to order anything in advance. |
| Silver Spring, Giant -- are you talking about the Blair Giant? Silver Spring is a big place. |
I just called the Giant on EW Hwy in Silver Spring and they told me categorically that they do not have nut-free cupcakes. I tried the one in Wheaton and they were very confused about it, which did not make me feel too confident. |
| Westbard Giant in Bethesda sells these. You can usually find them in the freezer located in the bakery (not the regular freezer section), sometimes right on a table in the bakery. They look like the regular Giant bakery cupcakes but have a note on the label that they were made in a nut free facility. |
