To the Parents of the 2-Year Old Girl Who Was Left Alone today at P St Playground by JCC in Dupont

I hope you tell your Director that it's time to make a written proceedure that is followed through by the teachers every single time they take a trip to playground- or anywhere off campus for that matter! How in the world 30 minutes passed before they even realized a child was left at the playground is totally beyond me. Head count, anyone? Reliable source said this is the 2nd time they know of that this has happened at the same park by the same child care center. Good thing that your daughter was fine, and that the people who called the police and JCC are good people who wanted to make sure she was returned safely. As a parent of young kids, I would raise hell, make sure all the parents are informed and make sure this never ever happens again to anyone else's child. Wake up call.

Children get left behind at my childrens daycare all the time. I do not know of a child being left behind outside of the center, as teachers and children are not allowed to leave, but they do get left behind on the playground and in the classrooms. Never has it been long, like 30 minutes but more along the lines of 5 to 10 minutes. Not sure why it takes even a couple minutes to notice that a child is missing.

This is terrible! How can someone be so irresponsible!

Holy sh*t.

My heart goes out to the parents who must have suffered for one terrible moment. If this happened to my child, I honestly don't know if I could stop myself from resorting to physical violence. At the very least, the place should be shutdown immediately pending an investigation of their suitability to maintain their license.

Granted it's a 5 minute walk from JCC to the P Street Playground- but this is a 2 year old we are talking about, a public playground we are talking about, and you need to cross 16th Street NW to get there.

What would shutting down the center solve? Nothing...

Perhaps put the teachers on administrative leave while pending an investigation of what happened, and come to a decision about the teachers job.

5 minutes is an eternity - are you kidding me???

There is absolutely no excuse for that. I taught in a daycare center and then kindergarten for years. I have never lost a child. Never even come close. You count and then you count again.

If it were my daycare center, I would pull my kids out immediately. That's a huge safety issue.

I don't know anything about this center, but some centers just have endemic problems caring for children. I was one of the posters who looked at the Chesterbrooke Academy in Kingstowne and I was shocked when I looked at their record on the DSS website. They lose children ALL THE TIME! Several times a year. One preschooler walked home by himself from the center (down the Fairfax County Parkway) and no one noticed. One was lost for 15-20 minutes riding a tricycle through the neighborhood streets. Every time it happens, they agree to review their procedures and train staff in how to not lose children . . . and it works for about 2-3 weeks until they lose the next one.

I don't know why some centers are allowed to keep running like this. Or why some parents knowingly opt to put their children in places like this, but it is just scary.

That is crazy. We have recently toured the DC JCC and signed up on the waitlist. The teacher to student ratio is so small there (which we liked) so how on earth do 2 teachers lose one of six kids??? And in the middle of DC??? Leaving a child alone AT ALL in any part of DC is crazy for ANY amount of time.
As a parent would you leave your kid alone in Dupont for "just five minutes"? I think not. I just so happened to come across this topic... otherwise I would have never known...
feel free to take us off the waitlist, JCC.

Another reaction of 'holy shit.' I'm almost as shocked by the PP who dismissed this as no big deal and said it happens all the time. My two children have attended a nearby daycare center that frequents various parks around Dupont and Adams Morgan, and if I ever got wind of a child being forgotten/left behind, I would pull them out immediately. I frequently meet my child's class when they are outside and I've never seen any circumstances under which a child is not within arm's length of a caregiver. I have friends with kids at the JCC and I've heard other questionable stories but this one takes the cake. There is something seriously wrong with the procedures and staff of any daycare that could allow this to happen even once. Twice is just unforgiveable.
