Does anyone have a good, basic salsa recipe? I just made a batch with tomatoes, cilantro, onion and lime juice and it tasted like tomatoes, cilantro, onions, and lime juice. The flavors didn't come together at all, even after being in the fridge overnight. Do people add MSG to good salsa? What am I missing?
You need to add lots of garlic, some jalapeno or even mild green chiles (from the can), salt some olive oil. I also like green onions in there. If I'm trying to make a lot of salsa I start with a jar of the "fake" stuff and then add all the fresh ingredients. That way you've got more of a "salsa" and less of a pico de gallo.

I forgot to mention that I added a lot of minced garlic. Maybe the critical missing ingredient was the oil -- that might hold it all together. (I skipped the hot peppers so my kids would eat it. I'll add them anyway next time.)
Thank you! |
Maybe puree all or some of it a little?
Salt - garlic or sea, will bring out the juice of the tomatos and blend the flavors better. I also add tomitillos. Still it is more of a pico consistancy. If you are looking for salsa, PP is right and you have to puree some of it.
